Nigerians on pilgrimage in Israel on Saturday held a special prayer session for their country in Jerusalem, asking God to intervene in the affairs of their land.

Various church leaders on the trip took turn to pray on issues ranging from peaceful co-existence to peaceful conduct of the 2019 general elections.

They also prayed for the revival of the nation’s economy, as well as agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

The prayers which were conducted under the auspices of Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), the agency saddled with the responsibility of coordination Christian pilgrimage to Israel, had in attendance about one thousand Nigerians currently in Israel for pilgrimage – they came from Abuja, Adamawa, Lagos, Oyo and Plateau states, among others.

Some Nigerian Church leaders present at the prayer session include President, Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Rev. Dr Dachollom Datiri, President of EYN, Rev Joel S. Billi, Chairman of Adamawa State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Chairman of Oyo State Christian Pilgrim Welfare Board, Very Rev. Ademola Moradeyo and Bishop Jonas Katung, among others.

In an exhortation, a member of NCPC Board, Rev. Israel Akanji, tasked the pilgrims to appreciate God for the privileged of participating in the exercise, saying the journey to Israel is that of an encounter with God.

Reading from the book of Luke chapter 24 verses 25 to 28, the preacher tasked the pilgrims to open their hearts to God for a special visitation.

“When we come here we should be open hearted so as to have an encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ.”

He tasked the pilgrims to trust God for the prayers offered, saying God answers all prayers offered in accordance with His will.

The Board member emphasised that Christian pilgrimage is beyond visiting places where Jesus walked, but also incorporate prayers which every pilgrim is expected to participate in.

In a chat with AFRICA PRIME NEWS, a pilgrim from Abuja, Mr. Alex Paman said the pilgrimage has uplifted him both Physically and spiritually.

“Most of the things we have seen here physically are a discovery made through excavations, meaning they are real.

“These are the real places where our master Jesus Christ went through in His lifetime — from His birth to His ministry, His suffering, His death and His resurrection

“All these things he went through for us, for our salvation and we are waiting for his return.

“As Christians, we are expected to live in love, forgiveness and perseverance. Trials and temptation will come, but the Holy Spirit is here to help us win the race.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo will on Tuesday inaugurate the Lagos edition of the National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Clinic.

Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, the state Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, disclosed this on Sunday in a statement signed by Babasola Ogunmosunle, Public Relations Manager in the ministry.

Oladunjoye said that the two-day MSME Clinic would hold on Aug. 6 and Aug.7 at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MSME Clinic is an initiative of the Office of the Vice President in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, as well as 11 other federal agencies.

Oladunjoye said that the event would further complement the state’s efforts at developing MSMEs in the state.

She gave an assurance the state that government would continue to implement policies that would boost growth of the sector.

“As it is evident to all, the present administration in Lagos State is leaving no stone unturned to ensure even development of all sectors, and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Clinic will never be an exemption.’’

The commissioner expressed confidence that the programme would raise a new set of entrepreneurs while the existing ones would be guided on the best steps to take to add value to their efforts.

According to her, the state will enhance the capacity of MSME operators with relevant skills that will position them to explore opportunities and access appropriate financial facility.

She said that the administration of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode established the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) with a seed capital of N25 billion.

The fund was earmarked for disbursement within four years to empower business owners with capital to revive moribund ventures, boost trade and start new ventures.

Oladunjoye recalled that Osinbajo had lauded the state government for the LSETF initiative, and for creating over 12,500 new jobs within the first six months of the scheme.

The commissioner expressed delight that the MSME Clinic was coming at a period when the state was creating conducive environment for small scale businesses to thrive.

Nigeria: Create Space In Public Places To Encourage Exclusive Breastfeeding — Expert

A Consultant Paediatrician in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, Dr Adaugo Onyedinma, has called on his country to create enclosed space in public places to encourage exclusive breastfeeding.

Onyedinma, whose special interest is in newborn health and infant nutrition, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“Government should create an enclosed space which can be called breastfeeding booths in public places where mothers can go in and have some privacy while breastfeeding outside the home.

“There should also be some public awareness campaigns to encourage the society to accept breastfeeding in public as a norm,’’ Onyedinma said.

The expert noted that lack of privacy in public had been a hindrance to nursing mothers breastfeeding their new born babies outside the home.

According to her, some mothers feel uncomfortable exposing their breasts in public.

The World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every Aug.1 to Aug.7, to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration signed in August 1990 by government policy makers, WHO, UNICEF and other organisations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding within one hour after birth and until a baby is six months old.

The organisation said nutritious complementary foods should be added while mothers continue to breastfeed for up to two years or beyond.

Onyedinma said nursing mothers needed constant counseling and encouragement, especially from their spouse and other stakeholders, on the need to exclusively breastfeed their babies at all times.

The paediatrician noted that the type of clothes some mothers wore hindered breastfeeding, adding it did not allow their babies gain access to the breast.

She also said some nursing mothers lacked enough breast milk supply due to work stress they experienced.

Onyedinma said there was need for first time mothers to fully understand the benefits of breastfeeding, adding that lack of knowledge contributed to their poor attitude toward breastfeeding

She also said that myths and preconceptions negatively influenced the practice of exclusive breastfeeding.

The medical practitioner said such myths and preconception were that breastfeeding caused sagging of breasts and that breast milk was not enough for a baby.

The erroneous belief, she added, gave rise to supplement with water and infant formula before 6 months.

The paediatrician said whether a mother breastfed her newborn or not, age would eventually cause the breast to sag.

Onyedinma, however, advised mothers to eat healthy to be able to exclusively breastfeed their babies and also live a healthy life style to avoid maternal ill-health and death.

Nigeria: Passengers’ Protest Delay Of Kaduna-Abuja Train

Hundreds of stranded train passengers on Sunday protested over alleged underhand dealings in the sale of tickets for the Kaduna-Abuja train service.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that although the train for the 4:00pm trip to Abuja had arrived on time, passengers had formed human shield preventing entry into the departure area at Rigasa station on Sunday in Kaduna, Northwest of the country.

The passengers said tickets were sold for only 10 minutes before they were told it had been exhausted.

A passenger, Usman Lamin, alleged that the train station officials had sold off the over 600 tickets to touts who openly sale at double the price.

The passengers said the station manager must allow everyone to board the train and collect the fares along the way, otherwise no one will get in.

Efforts to get official reaction was unsuccessful, but one of the workers at the train station said the only solution is to increase the number of train shuttles from the present two on Sundays.

He said on condition of anonymity that because of the fear of travelling by road due to security concern, people going to Abuja from Kaduna are increasingly relying on the train service.

As at the time of filling this report (4:10 pm) soldiers had to be deployed to the station where they barricaded places before passengers could board the train.

The Kano State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, on Saturday tendered his letter of resignation to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje amid political crisis.

Abubakar’s notice of resignation was contained in a letter he wrote to Ganduje dated Aug. 4, 2018.

The outgoing Deputy Governor said he had desired to remain in office until the end of their tenure, but chose to resign due to irreconcilable differences with the governor.

“I regret to write and notify you of my decision to resign my position as Deputy Governor of Kano State with effect from Saturday 4th August, 2018.

“Your Excellency, I would have desired to remain up to the end of our tenure in order to fulfill the aspirations and expectations of the good people of Kano State as expressed in their mandate given to our joint ticket in 2015.

“But with the current and persistent irreconcilable differences on matters relating to governance and government operations, personal opinions, and the concept of, and respect for, democratic ideals and values.

“It would be unfair to my conscience, to the good people of Kano State and to you as the head of the government to continue to remain in my position as the Deputy Governor.

“Your Excellency would recall several instances I had to draw your attention to the need to understand and appreciate these differences in order to avoid drifting into the kind of unnecessary crisis we are facing today, but to no avail,” the letter reads in part.

“I have endured immeasurable and unjustifiable humiliation for over two and half years without any reason other than my principled position on issues of governance and the desire to keep the government on track,” the letter added.

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Information, Malam Mohammed Garba, confirmed receipt of the resignation letter by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje.

Abubakar, a loyalist of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been at loggerheads with the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for siding with the former governor, now Sen Rabi’u Kwankwaso, in the political impasse in the state.

NAN recalled that the former Deputy Governor, Prof Hafiz Abubakar had on Tuesday, July 31, petitioned the state police Commissioner, Mr Rabi’u Yusuf and Department of Security Service over alleged threat to his life and plans to impeach him.

Nigeria: Kaduna Group Condemns Sen. Shehu Sani Over Party Allegiance

By Mohammed Ibrahim

A group under the auspices of El’rufai Win Ambassadors Project has lambasted Shehu Sani, the Senator Representing Kaduna Central, over his allegiance to President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressive Congress (APC).

The group, based in Kaduna, northern Nigeria described Sen. Sani’s allegiance to Mr. Buhari and APC as fake and urged loyalists of the President not be carried away by the Senator’s recent fake allegiance.

The group said “it beats” their “imagination” that a man who called President Buhari and Governor El-Rufa’i unprintable names still claims to be a loyalist of the party.

The Convener of the Win Project, Zubairu Mukhtar made the statement at a news briefing on Sunday in Kaduna.

“As youth who have the interest of the good people of Kaduna state at heart and children yet unborn, it is our collective responsibility to sensitize the good people of Kaduna State on the major setback brought to us by Senator Shehu for his personal motives of scoring cheap popularity and selfish political gains.

“What manner of APC loyalist would openly attack the personality of the President in the media more than even the opposition elements?

“How can an APC loyalist, who rode on the back of Buhari and El-rufai turn around to be the worst enemy of their people-oriented policies in fulfilment of their 2015 campaign promises to the masses?

“As we all know, the APC stands for integrity, justice and equity. It also stands against all political and social injustices, which saboteurs and opportunists like Shehu make a mockery of.

“We stand firm to say that we disassociate ourselves from any individual or political office holder who stands in the way of the collective progress and development of Kaduna State.

“We need a Senator who would stand up and fight for us, a man who loves all, a sincere gentleman who shares in the laudable vision, mission and programmes of President Buhari and Mal. Nasiru El-Rufa’i,” he said.

Mr. Muktar said, El-Rufa’i has been working tirelessly to ensure that all sectors of the state taste the dividends of democracy, namely Healthcare, Education, Agriculture, Youth and Women empowerment; Infrastructural development among others and anyone opposed to this is clearly an enemy of Kaduna State,” he said.

Nigeria: Archbishop Of Lagos Tasks INEC On 2019, Says Votes Openly Traded Like Commodity In Ekiti

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, on Saturday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to do its best to ensure credible and transparent general elections in 2019.

Martins made the call at the 20th anniversary of his Episcopal ordination and sixth installation anniversary, at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos South west Nigeria.

“In the recent governorship election in Ekiti, we were regaled with stories of how votes were openly traded like a commodity put up for sale between voters and major political parties.

“What a tragedy that such a scenario was allowed to play out unchecked at a time when change in all its ramifications is the expectation of all and sundry?” he asked.

The archbishop said that Nigeria needed reconfiguration for meaningful development.

He also called for improved security and welfare of the citizens.

“Our country is rated as having a large number of impoverished citizens,’’ he said.

He urged the three tiers of government to create more jobs for the youth to curb vices.

“Millions of our university graduates are doing odd jobs -driving taxis, selling recharge cards and manning betting joints (Baba Ijebu), just to eke out a living.

“Corruption still thrives; religious intolerance, injustice, nepotism, kidnapping, armed robbery and all forms of social ills still continue to slow down development,” he said.
He called for more participation of the younger generation in governance.

According to the cleric, many youths are enterprising and possess ideas that can be tapped for national development.

“The money politics that still rule our nation makes new people who are not aligned to the old order not to find a foothold in our political landscape.

“For how long shall this continue?’’ he asked.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Martins was ordained on Sept. 18, 1983, and appointed first Bishop of Abeokuta on Oct. 24, 1997.

He was appointed the Archbishop of Lagos on July 25, 2012, and enthroned as Archbishop on Aug. 4, 2012.

Nigeria: I’ll Rather Quit Politics Than Leave PDP For Any Other Party — Makarfi

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi

A presidential hopeful,  Ahmed Makarfi, has ruled out the possibility of leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for any other political party if he does not win the party’s ticket for the country’s top job in 2019.

He said he would rather quit politics, instead of joining any other political group.

Makarfi said this on Saturday while addressing newsmen at the PDP secretariat in Minna, the Niger State capital.

NAN reports that Makarfi is in Minna to drum up support for his presidential bid in 2019.

“If I leave PDP, I would leave politics. If I was to leave PDP, I could have defected a long time ago.So that possibility is not there,” he said

The one time governor of Kaduna said he predicted the recent mass defections to PDP, adding that the biggest challenge is managing it.

“I welcome all the defectors and as a matter of fact I predicted it. I said it that after the APC convention you would see a lot of defections and that’s what has happened.

“But the challenge is how to manage it. If we manage it well, the party would be better for it but if we don’t we may run into problems,” he said.

His position in Minna on the defectors, is softer than what he said in Lokoja on Friday, when he warned his party against giving them special treatment.

The said if not for the steadfastness of committed members, PDP could have become history.

“Some people when you pinch them like this (touching his arm), they will run to another party. When the going was tough, I stayed on… but you accept them into your house and give them your guest room. Next, they take the Master Bedroom; next, they drive you out of your house. We must not allow this, nor give undue advantage to them, so that we do not alienate our people.

“Modu Sheriff was brought from another party; they said he had three jets; he had billions, but what did he do? He was taking the party down, but I, the ‘bush boy,’ with the support of others, I was able to make members close ranks, and today, we can all see.”

Makarfi said Senator Bukola Saraki should be left alone as Senate President because he has not breached any provision of the constitution on account of his defection from APC to PDP.

“The constitution says the senators should elect from among themselves and not from the majority party”, said Makarfi, who also was a senator from 2007 to 2011.

“Party affiliations are only attached to other positions like minority whip, majority leader and so on

“Therefore, Saraki should be left alone because he was elected based on constitutional provisions and his continued stay is lawful,” he added

He noted that addressing issues of insecurity, unemployment, power, infrastructure and national unity would be his top priorities if given the chance to lead the country.

“A basket of issues including security, infrastructure and power would be top of my priorities.

“National cohesion is also key because we are divided and getting more divided by the day.

“And this national cohesion is where the issue of restructuring comes in as it will address unemployment,” he added.

NAN reports that Makarfi is a former governor of Kaduna State and immediate past national chairman of the PDP.
