Alarm: Fake Anti-Snake Venom In Circulation In North East Nigeria — Medical Expert

0

The officer in charge at the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre, Kaltungo, in Gombe state, northeast Nigeria, Dr Abubakar Ballah, has raised alarm over the circulation of fake anti-snake venom known as ASNA polyvalent.

Ballah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaltungo on Friday that the drugs are in circulation in Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa and Yobe states.

He said the unwholesome drugs, which were not suitable for the handling of bites inflicted on humans by African snakes, were produced by some pharmaceutical companies in India, and brought to the country,

“The Indian anti-snake venom is not specific to our own types of snakes but people are buying it because it is cheaper, not knowing that it is not effective,” he said.

He called on the authorities in the affected states to emulate Gombe State Mnistry of Health, which had succeeded in keeping such drugs out of the state through effective monitoring.

“The Ministry of Health in Gombe is strict about ensuring quality and standard,” he said.

According to him, NAFDAC is also doing its best to address the problem but some of the drugs are being smuggled into the country through the ‘back door,’ bearing fake NAFDAC registration numbers.

He also said that in 2015, International Society for Technology in UK, intervened by talking to the Indian producers to stop the production of the fake venom but they continued because of the huge profit involved.

“I am therefore calling on the Federal Government to intervene because of the threat to lives,” he urged.

Speaking on the best option for the treatment of snakebites in Africa, Ballah recommended Echitab ‘G’ and ‘Echitab plus’ anti-snake venom as the most potent, based on the outcome of research conducted some years ago.

He said Echitab G is specifically meant for carpet viper, the type of snakes that cover the whole of West Africa, while Echitab plus is meant for the treatment of bites from puff-adder, cobra and carpet viper snakes.

NAN reports that the Snakebite Treatment and Research Center in Kaltungo serves the entire North-East, other parts of the North, as well as neighbouring countries like Cameroon and Chad. (NAN)

Saudi-Led Coalition Probes Deadly School Bus Incident In Yemen – Reports

The Saudi-led Arab Coalition fighting Houthis in Yemen, has started an investigation into the deadly strike on a school bus in Yemen’s North, Saudi media reported.

The Arab coalition cited a high-ranking source in the report.

On Thursday, an airstrike carried out by the coalition in Saada, Yemen’s Northern Province, hit a bus carrying children from a summer camp.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), 51 people, including 40 minors, were killed and 79 more, including 56 minors, were injured.

“The command of the coalition has started an investigation into the reports made by the media and a number of websites of the humanitarian organisations, working in Yemen concerning one of the coalition’s operations in Saada province.

“The coalition is also investigating the data on the consequential damage caused to the passenger bus during this operation,’’ a source quoted by the Al Arabiya TV channel as saying.

He added that the coalition pledged to conduct investigations into all incidents involving allegations of wrongdoing and violations of international law while stressing that it was making “every effort to protect civilians’’.

The coalition reported earlier that Thursday’s airstrikes in Saada were targeted at the Houthi militants, who had previously tried to attack the southwestern Saudi port city of Jazan with a ballistic missile.

For several years, Yemen has been experiencing a violent conflict between the government and the Houthi rebels.

In March 2015, the conflict escalated as the Saudi-led coalition started carrying out airstrikes against Houthis at the government’s request.

The rebel movement has repeatedly launched missiles from the Yemeni territory, targeting different cities in Saudi Arabia. (Sputnik/NAN)

The Minister, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA,  Umar Jibrin, made the call while receiving the new FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma.

Bello expressed concern on the high rate of armed robbery and kidnapping on Bwari-Jere-Kaduna highway and the vandalism of street-lights, electricity cables, manholes and outright burning of transformers hence the need for maximum support from the police boss to stem the tide.

The Minister assured the Commissioner of government’s commitment to the resettlement of some of the original inhabitants at Wasa and Galuwyi/Shere resettlement schemes.

He explained that the needed infrastructure had been provided in Galuwyi/Shere where the original inhabitants in Jabi –Yakubu would be resettled assuring  that effective logistics have been put in place for the exercise.

Responding, the Commissioner commended the FCT Administration on infrastructural development in the territory, saying that there could be no meaningful development without adequate security.

He said though the safe-guarding of critical government infrastructure belonged to the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, NCDC, he would give instructions to his men to be vigilant and work hand-in-hand with the Corps as they are all stakeholders.

The Commissioner assured that security would be beefed up on the Bwari-Jere-Kaduna highway and solicited for assistance in the area of communication equipment and mobility.

Nigeria: Senate President, Deputy Raise Alarm Over Plot To Twist Facts On Assembly Invasion

Nigeria’s Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu have raised the alarm that the Federal Government has commenced the execution of a plot to implicate them and their colleagues in the People’s Democratic Party.

This is over the last Tuesday Invasion of the premises of the National Assembly by men of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement signed by their media aides, Yusuph Olaniyonu and Uche Anichukwu, the two legislative leaders stated that after receiving the interim report submitted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Idris Ibrahim, the Presidency has today constituted a closet panel to review the report and submit a final recommendation.

The mandate of this closet panel, the two legislators stated, is to turn facts on the head and blame the invasion of the National Assembly on the two leaders of the Red Chamber of the National Assembly, who will then be presented as having worked in tandem with the sacked Director General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura to stage the parliamentary security breach.

“We have been reliably informed that instead of the Presidency to set up a public inquiry or judicial commission to probe last Tuesday’s early morning Invasion of the National Assembly as being demanded by the general public, they have commenced a process of manipulation and fabrication.

“The Presidency has set up a closet panel, which would work to a predetermined conclusion in which they will now claim that the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President worked in collusion with ex-DG of DSS, Lawal Daura to stage the invasion.

“They want to shield the fact that the previous night before the invasion and up till the early hours of Tuesday, there was a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senators and that the plan was for them to be moved in a coaster bus into the National Assembly complex later that morning for them to purportedly remove us and select a new Senate President and Deputy Senate President.

“Their plot only failed because the media, particularly social media, Nigerians and international community responded very swiftly as some legislators who came into the complex were refused entry by gun-wielding, hooded security operatives.

“Now, they want to turn the facts on its head and blame us for their botched plot against democracy. We are hereby alerting all Nigerians and members of the international community that the present Nigerian government will stop at nothing to destroy, suppress and incapacitate the opposition. This is their new tactic and plot as we approach the period of the 2019 polls.

“We hereby reiterate our earlier position that the coup against democracy as represented by last week’s invasion must be probed through an independent judicial commission of inquiry which will produce a comprehensive report. We reject any manipulated and fabricated investigation,” Saraki and Ekweremadu stated.

The presiding officers added that they have also uncovered a sinister plot in which the government plans to use the anti-graft and security agencies to incarcerate them and some members of their families from next week,

The UN General Assembly in New York has appointed former President of Chile, Ms Michelle Bachelet, as High Commissioner for Human Rights, effective from Sept. 1, 2018.

The General Assembly officially appointed Bachelet after a vote on Friday following her nomination by the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to succeed outgoing Commissioner, Zeid Al Hussein, who assumed duty in September, 2014 and would bow out Aug. 31.

Minutes after she was voted in, Guterres told reporters that he was delighted by the news of her official appointment, saying “Bachelet has been as formidable a figure in her native Chile as she has at the United Nations”.

Highlighting her role as the first leader of UN Women, between 2010 and 2013, Guterres said she gave “that new entity a dynamic and inspiring start”.

He also pointed to her remarkable career as “the first woman to serve as the country’s President, and also as a survivor of brutality by the authorities targeting her and her family, many decades ago”.

“She has lived under the darkness of dictatorship.

“As a physician, she knows the trials of people thirsting for health and yearning to enjoy other vital economic and social rights. And, she knows the responsibilities of both national and global leadership”.

Following the announcement, Bacheret, who would be the seventh High Commissioner since the office was created in 1993, said she was “deeply humbled and honoured to have been entrusted with this important task”.

Guterres said as this year marked the 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a time when “hatred and inequality are on the rise,” it was vital to have a “strong advocate for all human rights”.

He added that he could not think of a better choice.

“Michelle Bachelet brings unique experience to the United Nations and to all of us, and is strongly committed to keeping human rights at the forefront of the work of the United Nations.

“She has my full confidence and support, and I ask all member-states and our partners to extend to her their support,” the Secretary-General said.

He also described Bacheret’s predecessor – Zeid – as having served with “leadership, passion, courage and skill” for the past four years.

The UN chief paid special tribute to Zeid, who is stepping down after one term as the key UN voice on global human rights, saying “I wish to express my deep gratitude to my good colleague and friend’’.

Zeid said in a statement on Friday that Bacheret “has all the attributes – courage, perseverance, passion and a deep commitment to human rights – to make her a successful High Commissioner”.

He added that the UN Human Rights Office “looks forward to welcoming her and working under her leadership for the promotion and protection of all human rights, for everyone, everywhere”.

The High Commissioner is the principal official who speaks out for human rights across the UN system, strengthening human rights mechanisms and enhancing equality.

The official also fights discrimination in all its forms, strengthening accountability and the rule of law, and widening the democratic space and protecting the most vulnerable from all forms of human rights abuse.

The European Union (EU), United Nations and other stakeholders, have called on the Federal Government to encourage more women to participate in the 2019 elections.

They made this submission at a thematic breakfast meeting, titled ‘Women’s participation in the 2019 Nigerian general elections’ organised by EU in collaboration with UN women, on Thursday in Abuja.

The Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Richard Young, said it was imperative for more women in Nigeria to participate in politics.

According to him, this will help in reducing poverty and increase economic growth in the country.

Young said women participation in politics was about fundamental human rights, “more women participation in politics is all about Human Rights, our human value and economical beneficial”.

Comfort Lamptey, Country Representative, UN Women, Nigeria, in her remarks expressed hope that 2019 would bring more miracle by seeing more women in leadership position in Nigeria.

Amb. of Denmark in Nigeria, Torben Getterman, in his goodwill message said, “considering the population of Nigeria, there should be a sizeable number of women participation in politics, either as voters or candidates to be voted for.

“It is our wish to reach out to more women to participate in politics. We must make more women to vote for women,” he said.

Meanwhile the Delegation of the EU to Nigeria and ECOWAS had condemned what it called “interference in the democratic process by law enforcement services’ in Nigeria.

The Union in a statement earlier called on all law enforcement agents to stay neutral and non-partisan in the country’s democratic process.

The EU noted with concern the barring of access to the National Assembly on Aug. 7 by the masked security operatives and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

“It is imperative for all law enforcement agents to stay neutral and ensure that independent institutions operate in line with their constitutional mandates, free from interference and intimidation.

“The EU is fully committed to supporting democracy in Nigeria,” it added.

Nigeria on Thursday inaugurated 124 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria for continued use by the public – some of them newly constructed, while some upgraded, a number of the clinics were provided perimeter fencing, toilets facilities, staff quarters, solar powered boreholes, hospital equipment.

The projects which according to government gulped N1.2 billion from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) funds, were inaugurated by Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Adejoke Adefulire, at one of the new Primary Health Care Centres at Bakin Kasuwa, Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

Inaugurating the projects, Adefulire said that they were executed to increase access to quality health care services, particularly to pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The presidential aide said that the projects were implemented under the MDGs 2014/2015 Conditional Grant Scheme.

She commended the state government for the timely completion of the projects and pledged to continue working with the state in providing more health facilities in rural communities.

“We cannot talk about ending maternal and infant deaths when rural population do not have access to health car services.

“We are working with Kaduna state and other states across the country to improve the quality of lives of Nigerians through various intervention in economic, social, and environmental lives of the people, ” she added.

Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Barnabas Bantex, said, the projects were located in the six local government areas with highest number of maternal and infant mortality in the state.

He identified the local government areas as Chikun, Kaura, Kachia, Igabi, Kubau and Ikara, and thanked the SDGs Office for supporting Kaduna state in its quest to improve the quality of life of citizens through the provision of quality health care.

“We will continue to welcome such support and make budgetary provisions to match whatever amount the Federal Government supports us with for people oriented projects, ” he said.

In a remark, Kaduna State Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Muhammad Abdullahi, said the projects were executed with N600 million from the SDG office and N600 million from the state government as matching grant.

Abdullahi said that the projects became necessary after a survey in 2016 which indicated that 70 per cent of pregnant women in the state deliver at home.

He said that situation led to a high level of maternal and infant mortality in the state particularly in local government areas where the projects were sited.

According to him, the health facilities would significantly improve the health outcome of the state through increase access to quality health care services.

“The state will continue to make necessary budgetary provision to ensure that no one is left behind in health care service delivery.”
