Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has died. He died aged 80 in the early hours of Saturday in Swiss capital, Bern.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness,” says a post on Kofi Annan Foundation on its Twitter page.

The Kofi Annan Foundation tweet described him as a “global statesman and deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world”.

“Wherever there was suffering or need, he reached out and touched many people with his deep compassion and empathy. He selflessly placed others first, radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did.”

He served as the seventh UN Secretary General for almost 10 years, from 1997 to 2006.

Annan’s tenure as UN secretary-general coincided with the Iraq War.

He later served as the UN special envoy for Syria, leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Annan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

A PREMIUM TIMES journalist, Samuel Ogundipe, who has been detained since Tuesday has been released.

Mr Ogundipe was released on Friday morning after he was granted bail by magistrate Abdulwahab Mohammed of the Kubwa Grade 1 Magistrate Court in Kubwa, Abuja.

The judge had first heard the case on Wednesday after Mr Ogundipe was secretly arraigned without being allowed legal representation. On that day, Mr Mohammed granted a request by the police that the journalist be detained for five days until August 20.

However on Friday morning, PREMIUM TIMES learnt Mr Ogundipe was to be taken to the same court. The company’s lawyer was thus present at the court.

At the court, the lawyer argued for the bail of Mr Ogundipe, a request that was not opposed by the police counsel.

Mr Mohammed granted the bail in the sum of N500,000 and a surety who must be resident withing the court’s jurisdiction.

The bail conditions were met and Mr Ogundipe was released.

Earlier on Thursday, PREMIUM TIMES had responded to a statement by police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, accusing Mr Ogundipe of being in possession of classified document.

Mr Moshood alleged that Mr Ogundipe’s action was capable of causing a breach of national security and a breakdown of law and order.

In its response, PREMIUM TIMES through its lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, said Mr Moshood’s statement was “misleading and prejudicial.”

Nigerian Charity Organisation, Pink Oak Undertakes Treatment Of 25 Cancer Patients

0

By Joseph Edegbo

A Nigerian Charity Foundation, Pink Oak, says it is currently working with its partners to raise N100 million and sponsor the treatment of 25 or more cancer patients before December 2018.

To this end, the Governing Board under the leadership of Mr. Fola Adeola has given an approval for the initiative.

Consequently, the Executive Director, Dr. Laz Ude Eze, has also announced a launch of the 25 Patients Initiative.

Under the initiative, Pink Oak will work with its 5-member NGOs to identify patients in early cancer stages (Stage 1 or 2) but cannot afford to fund their treatment fully.

The eligible patients shall be treated at various hospitals in Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan and Lagos, already designated as treatment centres for Pink Oak supported patients.

A statement by Media Assistant to Pink Oak, Rita Eugene, Pink Oak shall not pay cash to patients; rather, all payments shall be made directly to the treatment centres.

“Pink Oak is a charity foundation working with other cancer advocacy NGOs to improve access to cancer care.  We encourage good-spirited Nigerians, corporate and religious organisations to donate generously towards this cause to enable us save more lives from cancer.

“It is pertinent for the public to know that Pink Oak does not recruit patients directly. We only sponsor eligible patients recommended by our member-NGOs. These organisations include Breast Without Spot (Enugu), Cancer Aware Nigeria (Lagos), Project Pink Blue (Abuja), St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation (Lagos) and Sebeccly Cancer Care (Lagos). Other NGOs across the country interested in joining us to fight cancer should contact us via info@pinkoak.org. All patients who desire our support should kindly reach out to them.

“We thank all our donors and partners whose supports have been of immense help to us. Together, we shall defeat cancer in Nigeria. To #DonateToBeatCancer, visit www.pinkoak.org/donation,” the statement says.

Gombe State House of Assembly Minority Leader, Ahmed Usman Haruna, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the national ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Announcing his defection at the House plenary session on Thursday, Mr. Haruna, who is representing Gombe North State constituency, revealed that, it was necessary for him to leave APC for the PDP, because the party had failed to meet the aspiration and yearnings of the people.

He said the party at national level also failed to address his grievances, after the party in the state suspended him without duly following the consstitution.

The speaker, Abubakar Nasiru Nono, who received the new member to the party, assured that he would not regret his decision.
