Former Comoros president Ahmed Sambi has been formally charged with corruption and embezzling public funds in connection with a scheme to sell his country’s passports.
Sambi, who had previously been questioned and placed under house arrest, will also be officially detained to prevent him from fleeing the country or undermining investigations by communicating with others accused of involvement in the scheme.

A lawyer for Sambi said he was being held in “prison-like” conditions.

The ex-president, who was in power from 2006 to 2011, has previously denied all allegations against him.

Comoros launched a programme with the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait in 2008 to sell citizenship to stateless people in those countries in return for cash to help develop the poor Indian Ocean archipelago.

However, an investigation by the Comoros parliament released earlier this year found that thousands of passports were sold outside official channels via “mafia” networks and at least 100 million dollars of revenues went missing.

A court document, dated Aug. 20 and seen by Reuters, showed Sambi also faces charges linked to forgery and falsification of records.

Neither the document nor the prosecutor gave details on when any trial might take place.

Mahamoud Ahamada, one of Sambi’s lawyers, confirmed that Sambi had been charged and restrictions on him had been tightened, even though he was still sleeping in his own home.

“Sambi no longer has access to his telephone and the conditions of his detention are prison-like,” he said.

“It seems he has been detained and charged in relation to the (passport) issue.”

Sambi’s lawyers had challenged his house arrest and argued that the move was an attack on democracy in Comoros.

Current President Azali Assoumani has just won a referendum that will extend presidential term limits and end the system of rotating power between the archipelago’s three main islands.

Bayelsa Journalist Jones Abiri, standing trial for alleged involvement in militancy, returned to the warm embrace of his wife, children and colleague on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abiri, who was received at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, expressed his optimism of getting justice.

Abiri was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) since July 2016 and detained for over two years without trial.

He was, however, arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court this month and subsequently, granted bail.

Speaking at a reception to welcome him to Yenagoa, two years after his ordeal, Abiri said that contrary to the views held by the DSS, he was ready to face trial and prove his innocence.

Abiri, a law student before his incarceration, applauded the civil rights community, media and public-spirited individuals, who fought for his release from DSS custody.

He expressed his gratitude to the Bayelsa State Council of the NUJ for the warm reception accorded him and the support given by the union during his incarceration.

In a goodwill message, a Niger Delta Rights Activist, Ms Annkio Briggs, noted that it took the intervention of Amnesty International to draw public attention to the abuse of Abiri’s human rights.

“I only became aware of the ungodly and evil breach of Abiri’s fundamental and professional rights after Amnesty International raised the matter.

“I am proud of you and I am so happy that you are back home to your family, people and region. From here on, you will never walk alone,” Briggs said.

Mr John Angese, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Council of the NUJ, noted that Abiri was a member of the NUJ and discredited earlier reports that Abiri was not on the NUJ register.

“Let me state that Jones Abiri is one of us here in Bayelsa. We cannot deny him because of the allegations levelled against him.

“Our position has always been that he should be presented in court.  Now that the matter is in court, the judiciary should be allowed to determine if he is guilty or not.

“We appeal to our colleagues to be cautious in reportage of this reception and avoid comments that will jeopardise the trial,” Angese said.

In her vote of thanks, Abiri’s sister, Mrs Philomena Kenere, said their family was delighted to have Abiri re-uniting with them.

She expressed appreciation to everyone, who supported the family during Abiri’s absence.

Trump Says ‘Disgraced, Discredited’ Mueller ‘Looking For Trouble’

Russia probe: Trump lawyers 'in talks over Mueller interview'
President Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Robert Mueller, the Special Counsel looking into the alleged Russian meddling in the Nov. 8, 2016 U.S. presidential election, accusing him of “looking for trouble”.

Trump, in a barrage of tweets, also viciously attacked Mueller and his team, whom he tagged “angry Democrats”, over the time they were taking to probe into the alleged Trump’s Campaign collusion with the Russians.

Alleged Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, in which Trump won by Electoral College but lost to Clinton by almost three million popular votes, led to the set-up of the special panel headed by Robert Mueller.

Trump said: “Disgraced and discredited Bob Mueller and his whole group of Angry Democrat Thugs spent over 30 hours with the White House Counsel, only with my approval, for purposes of transparency.

“Anybody needing that much time when they know there is no Russian Collusion is just someone looking for trouble.

“They are enjoying ruining people’s lives and REF– USE to look at the real corruption on the Democrat side – the lies, the firings, the deleted Emails and soooo much more!

“Mueller’s Angry Dems are looking to impact the election. They are a National Disgrace!

“Where’s the Collusion? They made up a phony crime called Collusion, and when there was no Collusion they say there was Obstruction (of a phony crime that never existed).

“If you FIGHT BACK or say anything bad about the Rigged Witch Hunt, they scream Obstruction!”

On Saturday, the White House Counsel were grilled by the Mueller’s team for over 30 hours, and 1.4 million pages of White House documents have been given to the panel.

“I allowed White House Counsel Don McGahn, and all other requested members of the White House Staff, to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel.

“In addition we readily gave over one million pages of documents. Most transparent in history. No Collusion, No Obstruction. Witch Hunt!” Trump said.

The president restated his allegations of bias against the panel, describing it a “rigged and disgusting witch hunt” adding “so many lives have been ruined over nothing – McCarthyism at its WORST! Yet Mueller & his gang of Dems refuse to look at the real crimes on the other side”.

Trump insisted there was no collusion by his campaign but accused his arch rival and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and her party of obstruction.

Trump received 304 electoral votes and Clinton garnered 227 but while Trump polled 62,984,825 or 46.4 per cent of the popular votes, Clinton polled 65,853,516 or 48.5 per cent.

“No Collusion and No Obstruction, except by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats. All of the resignations and corruption, yet heavily conflicted Bob Mueller refuses to even look in that direction.

“What about the Brennan, Comey, McCabe, Strzok lies to Congress, or Crooked’s Emails!” Trump tweeted.

Amaechi’s Ally, Eze Reacts To “No Serious Party Has Approached Me (Amaechi) Yet”

0
Rotimi Amaechi
Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi,

Describes it as False, Mischievous, ill-concvied and an Improbable Concoction from a Devious and Demented Mind

….Urges those behind such spurious propaganda to look for better work to do

*Highlighted the two major Projects before Amaechi

By Nwaorgu Faustinus

An ally of the Minister of Transportation and former spokesman of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has dismissed recent media report ascribing a statement of regret to the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as ‘fake news’.

Eze, who reacted through a statement he personally signed and circulated to the Media Organisations on Monday to the report with the title “No Serious Party Has Approached Me Yet”, saying that the authors of the fake, malicious, ill-conceived and concocted piece were actually targeting the cordial and respectful relationship between the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi with President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Senator Godswill Akpabio and other leaders of the party.

According to the APC chieftain and foundation member of the party, the authors used a nonexistent Ibeh, supposedly a friend of the Minister of Transportation, Amaechi, to portray a ‘regret that only exists in their minds’, create a link that does not exist between the Minister and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, so that the he (will look like a black leg in the party ‘to which he has invested his sweat and blood’.

The Media mogul noted “the attributions of the authors of the satanic write-up, that Amaechi’s confirmation as a Minister of the Federal Republic was the doing of Senator Saraki flies in the face of the truth because contrary to the insinuation of the writers, Saraki was opposed to the appointment of Amaechi as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because of his (Amaechi’s) closeness to the President. Besides that Amaechi is the opposite of what Saraki and his co-travelers in defiance of the party’s supremacy stand for”.

He recalled the level of risks Amaechi took in rejecting PDP and assisting other progressives to get APC to the level it is in Nigeria and world politics and has no regret for the part he played in installing the APC as the ruling party in Nigeria and will do all within his powers to ensure that the party is re-elected come 2019, no matter the odds.

Eze wondered how such a worthless statement could be ascribed to Amaechi, knowing very well how he risked his life by joining the APC train against the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Nyesom Wike who threatened to kill him on several occasions.

He recalled that in one of his outbursts, Wike threatened, according to the PUNCH of February 22, 2014, with the title, “FG’ll arrest Amaechi after Jonathan’s victory –Wike”, reported and is excerpted here: “Once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announces the victory of President Jonathan, we will immediately shut down the Port Harcourt International Airport and all land and sea borders in Rivers State to prevent Governor Amaechi from escaping or does he (Amaechi) think we don’t know that he is planning to run away? But he and his cohorts will not succeed. All they can do thereafter is to lock themselves inside the Government House and at the appropriate time, we will go there and pick them up one after the other.”

Eze wants to be educated how after all these attempts by Wike and his cohorts coupled with how they attempted to stop Amaechi’s confirmation as a Minster and all the failed attempts to cause friction between him and Mr. President how will it be possible for he (Amaechi) to contemplate of leaving APC or regret of assisting in installing APC as a ruling party in Nigeria?

He, however, accused Governor Nyesom Wike and Senator Magnus Abe of being the brains behind such unwarranted attempt to tarnish the image of the Minster of Transportation as their past plots of sponsoring such malicious reports have always failed like a pack of cards.

Eze expresses happiness that most of the time that such fabricated lies are being peddled; President Buhari normally laughs it over wondering who will come between him and his son (Amaechi) in whom he is well pleased with.

Eze further highlighted that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has two gigantic projects at hand which is to deliver on his core mandates as the Minster of Transportation – drive Nigeria’s transportation system to a global height through massive infrastructure development and as the Director General of Buhari/Osinbajo Presidential Campaign Organisation to deliver President Muhammadu Buhari at the APC Presidential Primary, then, at the Presidential election proper, so Wike and his misguided team should look for something tangible to do to improve on their fading political profile.

He stated that the public should ignore such a report as it emanated from people that are threatened by the high political profile of Amaechi particularly the cordial relationship between him and Mr. President.

Finally, Eze stated that no amount of falsehood and propaganda will cause Amaechi to leave APC no matter the odds as Amaechi sacrificed his blood to assist in making APC whatever it is today and advised those behind propagating and promoting all manner of falsehoods against Amaechi to look for something better to do.

ENDS
