Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, Robert J. Petri, has stressed his country’s commitment to supporting the growth of Nigeria’s economy.

This he said can be achieved through various contributions to agriculture, economic sustainability, peace and security.

The Ambassador stated this when he hosted a group of young people on the platform of Nigeria Youths SDGs Network at the Netherlands Embassy for the August edition of the monthly SDGsStory Hangout.

His statement came shortly after the World Poverty Clock statistics and the Brooklyn report, which placed Nigeria on the top, implying Nigeria is the poorest country in the world.

Speaking on the embassy’s approach to contributing to Peace and Security in Nigeria, the Ambassador said, “We believe very much in dialogue as a model to a peaceful coexistence. In fact, we love to dialogue with people who do not agree with us.

“Here at the Dutch Embassy, our programmes involve private sectors both in Nigeria and in the Netherlands to boost small businesses. We also work closely with the universities and research centres in areas of agriculture to address some of the hindrances to economic sustainability.” Ambassador Petri said.

Ndigbo Must Begin A Journey Back To The Soul Of ‘Our’ Ancestors

Many persons lack connections with their souls. The only connection they can think or boast of is the connection to create and make wealth. They have much time to pursue money but had no time to nurture their Inner Being, hence the separation between the body and the soul has become a huge problem besetting mankind.

Many of these persons do not know where to turn to when the wealth vanishes. Because they have been living a life without their soul intact, they would vanish just as the wealth. This brings to bay the way my Igbo forebears lived.

My Igbo forebears did not separate themselves from the spirit while in pursuit of wealth. They observed the spirit world and the realm of matter without a separation. They believed that in as much as matter occurs, Spirit can be found, and vice versa.

Remember that my Igbo forebears didn’t see or periscope spirituality as a part of life. They believed that all life is spiritual. Hence, they observed the seen and unseen world to be working together.

Our worldview then was the best unlike today many of us are viewing the world through the periscope of the West where what matters is ‘leave the past behind and look only to the future.’

The ‘future’ here is wealth. My Igbo forebears did not do that: They carried both the past into the future. My Igbo forebears were not only interested in ‘drive-to-succeed’ (not at all costs) but did not allow this to separate their souls from them. They never allowed their lives to lack deeper meaning and nevertheless, they were not empty.

The ancient Igbo never separated self from the land of ancestors and the realm of Spirit. They had meaning individually to their community and gave structure and meaning to life. This made them the wise people as has been acclaimed worldwide.

Unlike today, the Igbo have eschewed what worked for them in the past. They are living in the past glory. We just have schooled brilliant persons today and not actually wise people like our forebears who operated in our community by exhibiting intention for general well-being and oozed positive energy.

However, this is the time we have to reconnect to our natural environment and begin the journey back to the soul of our ancestors in order to achieve completeness. The time is now.

A beneficiary of the Bauchi State Women Empowerment Programme, Aishatu Ibrahim has said that the innovation by the Mohammed Abubakar led Administration has not only alleviated women in the State from poverty, but worthy of emulation by other States.

This success story, she said, would garner women’s support for the Governor, come 2019.
Aishatu, who was speaking with AFRICA PRIME NEWS on Sunday in Bauchi, Northeast of the country, said about 500 women benefited from the programme and urged the Administration to extend it beyond 2019 to enable more women to benefit.
She also commended the leadership style of the Governor and his wife, Hadiza Abubakar under her Pet Project, Bauchi Sustainable Women Economic Empowerment and Peace Initiative (B-SWEEP).
‘’We have worked and prayed fervently for positive change both at the state and the national levels and today we ’re happy having President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Abubakar in Bauchi State formulating programmes that are improving our lives and the complementary projects of Her Excellency, Hajiya Hadiza Abubakar going a long way in advancing the economy and alleviating poverty in the society.
“Hadiza Abubakar is also the Chairperson of the Northern Governor’s Wives Forum (NGWF) and Founder of an NGO, Bauchi Sustainable Women Economic Empowerment and Peace Initiative who has assisted hundreds of women in the state. All women in the state would benefit from the similar gesture as she promised to extend the projects to other parts of the state”, she said.

The Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) has attributed the shortfalls in coconut value chain and research development to poor funding and delay in the release of funds when available.

Dr Charles Aisagbonhi, the Director-General of NIFOR, made the assertion during his presentation to commemorate the World Coconut Day on Sunday at Suntan Beach, Badagry, Lagos.

Aisagbonhi explained that there was so much research work to be carried out across the value chains of coconut.

Aisagbonhi, who was represented by Dr Victor Adaigbe, Director, Coconut Department, NIFOR, said that coconut was the heritage of Lagos State and should be given priority to garner the support it deserved.

“If we have enough funds, we will be able to research on disease-resistant coconut that can yield more per hectare and meet demand resulting from greater appreciation of coconut.

“Poor funding affects effective researches on coconut. However, inadequate infrastructure for research in the sub- and experimental stations is also a challenge.

“Also, training and retraining of research and research support staff has affected the development of coconut.

“Since Lagos State is anchored by two coconut trees, it means it is the major crop of the state and should be given priority,’’ the director-general said.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government to engage in programmes that could attract Federal Government’s support to preserve its heritage.

The Director-General called on the Federal Government to resuscitate the NIFOR station in Badagry as the facilities were dilapidated.

NAN reports that Badagry currently harbors two million coconut trees and has the potential of having 10 million trees.

The World Coconut Day 2018 doubles as the seventh Coconut Heritage Festival (AGUNKEFEST 2018), a collaboration between the state government and the African Coconut Heritage Initiatives.

NAN also reports that the theme of the World Coconut Day 2018 is “Harnessing Coconut Production for Economic Empowerment and Tourism Development in Lagos State’.

Libya will actively implement the memorandum of understanding and restore and develop its economy with the help of the Belt and Road Initiative, Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Serraj has said.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), was first proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2013.

The BRI or the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road is a development strategy proposed by the Chinese government which focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily the People’s Republic of China, the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road.

Until 2016 the initiative was known in English as the One Belt and One Road Initiative (OBOR) but the Chinese came to consider the emphasis on the word “one” as misleading.[2]

Serraj welcomed  Chinese companies are welcome back to Libya and the upcoming Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) offers an opportunity to enhance bilateral cooperation

The summit is scheduled for Mondau and Tuesday with the theme “China and Africa: Toward an Even Stronger Community with a Shared Future through Win-win Cooperation.”

It aims to deepen China-Africa relations “for the benefit of the African peoples and the friendly Chinese people,” Serraj said in an interview with Xinhua ahead of his trip to China.

Libya joined the FOCAC in 2000 when the forum was established. It is also a member of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF).

In July, China and Libya signed a Memorandum of Understanding on jointly building the Belt and Road during the eighth ministerial meeting of the CASCF held in Beijing.

“All this comes in confirmation of the importance Libya attaches to relations with the People’s Republic of China at all levels.

“Our country is at an extraordinary stage and faces multiple political, economic and security challenges,” Serraj said.

“We look forward to cooperating with the friendly People’s Republic of China to meet these challenges,” he added.

Serraj said Libya will actively implement the memorandum of understanding, and restore and develop its economy with the help of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Libyan prime minister also revealed that he will discuss the return of Chinese companies to Libya during his visit to China.

“Chinese companies in the past played an important role in Libya’s development and construction process and gained a good reputation,” he said, adding that Libya “offers opportunities to invest in multiple areas.”

In early 2011, an uprising against former leader Muammar Gaddafi broke out in Libya, forcing most foreign companies to leave the country due to a deteriorating security situation.
