The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will commence nationwide strike after the expiration of its 14 days ultimatum given to the Federal Government on the new minimum wage.
Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, said this while addressing newsmen at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the congress on Wednesday in Abuja.
Wabba said that the industrial action would become necessary if orgnised labour’s demand to reconvene the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage for workers was not met.
It would be recalled that the organised labour had issued the Federal Government 14-day ultimatum that commenced on the Sept.12.
The Organised Labour had insisted that the Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage should conclude its work within the stipulated time frame.
According to him, NEC in session has expressed disappointment at the manner in which the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage unilaterally adjourned the meeting indefinitely.
“NEC expresses serious concern at the unilateral adjournment of the negotiation of the new minimum wage by the Federal Government on the day the tripartite committee was expected to complete its assignment.
“NEC noted that this is against the principle of collective bargaining as provided in International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions 98 and 131 on Minimum Wage setting process, which Nigeria had domesticated.
“NEC has resolved to commence action at the expiration of the 14 days ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over the new minimum wage, if the demand of the organised labour was not met.
“That NEC has given National Administrative Council and the leadership of organised labour the power to declare appropriate industrial action or any action it deems necessary.
The NLC president also said that the NEC in session had approved and applauded the organised labour for taking a proactive step by issuing a statutory 14 days industrial action notice.
He said NEC in session noted that the ultimatum issued to the government would preserve the sanctity of the collective bargaining process.
Wabba also said that the demand for the tripartite committee to reconvene within a set period to finalise its report was in line with the principles of collective bargaining.
“NEC also resolve that all its affiliate unions and the 36 state councils of Congress and the FCT and joint action front should communicate the decision of NEC to their members and all workers,‘’ he added.

Gov. Ambode of Lagos State, Nigeria
Members of a group known as Coalition for Good Governance in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, on Wednesday staged rallies in Ikeja to support Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s re-election, citing his sterling performances.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state has been witnessing some rallies in the last few days in support of Ambode’s continuity as the Lagos State Governor after 2019 elections.
The rallies are coming against the backdrop of speculations that Ambode has fallen out of favour with his political godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Tinubu is said to be currently rooting for a former commissioner in the state, Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu, who has already declared his intention to contest the governorship on the platform of the APC party, where Ambode also belongs.
Analysts view the development as a trying political season for Ambode, who has since announced his desire to seek re-election.
Tinubu, a former Lagos State Governor and Senator, has dominated the politics of Lagos State, Nigeria’s economic capital for many years.
On Sept. 14, a group called “Ambodemania Movement/Support Worldwide’’, staged a similar rally in Lagos to celebrate what they called “good governance in Lagos’’.
Another group known as Human and Consumer Rights Advocacy Centre, staged rallies in various parts of Lagos on Monday to also support Ambode’s re-election.
Also, a group of youths in Epe, the home base of Ambode, staged a rally in support of his continuity on Tuesday.
Members of the coalition, who chanted different solidarity songs in support of Ambode’s ambition to rule the state for another four years, carried placards with various inscriptions to drive home their demands.
Some of the placards read: “Ambode is working, Lagos is moving”, “Asiwaju, Pardon your son”, “Ambode Lekan Ski”, “APC Leaders, Re-elect Ambode”, and “Support Ambode for second term” among others.
Others are : “Let the good work continue”, “Asiwaju, the Pathfinder, pls free Ambode to continue”, Lagosians, Pls let the good projects continue”.
One of the leaders of the group, Mr Ayo Mojoyin, urged the party leaders to forgive any shortcoming of Ambode and consider his love and passion to deliver dividends of democracy to the masses.
Mojoyin said: “Everyone within and outside the state can attest to the fact that Ambode has tried in the last three and half years. He has delivered so many bridges, road infrastructures and created employment opportunities among others.
“The feat of the state governor in security through the Neighborhood Safety Corps establishment is also a plus for him. We are pleading with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to allow Ambode to continue.”
He said that so many ongoing projects that scattered across the state should be allowed to be concluded.
Another leader of the group, Mr Soola Hassan said that his support for the rally was due to his realisation that Ambode had a good plan for the state, especially the youths and the unemployed.
“I decided to come out for this rally because Ambode’s good works are speaking for him. Ambode has also done well in embedded power supply besides massive road infrastructure, he should continue,” Hassan said.
Another, Mr Babatunde Jaji, pleaded with Tinubu and party leaders to allow Ambode to continue with his good work because of the masses.
“We can see the good things Ambode is doing, let’s look at Neighbourhood Watch, bus stops, roads and bridges. He hasn’t finished, it is better to allow him to continue,” Jaji said.
Alhaja Olabisi Oladepo, an Septuagenarian, urged Tinubu to forgive Ambode of whatever offences he had done, saying the old people were behind his re-election in 2019.
“Ambode should continue, Asiwaju should act as a father which he has been. The developmental projects of Ambode across the state are many, he should be allowed to finish them.
“Ambode is working, he has taken after Fashola (immediate past governor) and Tinubu himself. Go to Berger, Agege, Epe and other areas, you will marvel,” Oladepo said.

In news production, be it broadcast, print or online, the role of the Editor in ensuring smooth consumption of information cannot be over emphasised.
The Editor being the final gate keeper of any piece before it gets to the public domain , plays a critical role; however, little attention is given to support editors in carrying out their responsibilities.
This is more difficult with the emergence of the new media which provides an individual whether professional or not, the opportunity to be the reporter, editor and even Publisher.
This has led to a number of flaws in the output of news contents on several mediums especially the online platforms.
It was against this backdrop that Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) on Tuesday, 18th September 2018 held its 2nd Editors Workroom; a platform that brings together Editors from different organisations to examine issues editors’ encounter in carrying out their duties.
In a Paper titled: The Editor, Mr. Joseph Edegbo, Managing Editor of Africa Prime News (APN) noted that “the Editor’s position is not necessarily a comfortable one; carrying a heavy price in the discharge of the Responsibilities commiserate with their powers.”
Therefore, for an editor to carry out his responsibilities effectively, he/she must build a sense of responsibility towards “the State, the Proprietor, Readers, and his conscience”.
As a good editor, “it is important to delegate authority and know how best to tap the available talents in his office; as no Editor can possibly be an expert in all fields; while he also mentors people he/she works with”.
Edegbo enjoined Editors especially upcoming ones to “always improve on their vocabulary by continuous reading of books like novels and other well written articles. Always read about well accomplished editors and journalists; also monitor other stations, paying special attention on how they report the same story you edited”.
One of the major issues highlighted during an interactive session was the poor output of stories; in structure and grammar recorded on most news mediums. This was traced to an unhealthy influx of untrained people into journalism practice, low capacity among some professionals, laziness and nonchalance towards professional development on the part of many practitioners.
To address this, participants agreed on the need for journalists to continually develop their capacity and take positive steps that will make non professionals feel irrelevant in the profession.
Also, Media Organisations must ensure a consistent training and re-training of their reporters and editors.
The Coordinator, Africa Media Development Foundation, AMDF, Sekyen Dadik had at the opening, reiterated the continued desire of the Foundation to develop the media and journalists as well as provide needed insights to academic and development communication Initiatives in Africa.

Residents of some communities in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State in Nigeria have commended United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and its partners for providing them with a solar driven borehole and toilets in their schools.
The Water project was funded by Department for International Development (DFID) in partnership with Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA). It was implemented by UNICEF, under its Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project.
“Our houses were dirty because women don’t have water to clean the kitchen utensils. 10- 20 people fall sick weekly but since we started drinking from the borehole the number drastically reduced,” said Village Head of Gora, Gambo Musa, adding that before the borehole was provided, their sources of water were wells and a river located about 3 kilometres away from the village.
Common illnesses in the village include diarrhoea, rashes and fever.
“Our lives have now improved since we stopped drinking from well and river. We need more solar borehole in the village because there are about 3000 people and 600 households in the village that depend on the only solar borehole,” he said.
Appreciating the provision of the toilets, he said it has curtailed the practice of open defecation in the community because, “virtually all houses in the village now have toilets”.
“We no longer defecate openly in bush, because majority of the houses in the village now have toilets,” he said.
WASHCOM Chairman in Gora Community of Kachia, Tijani Korama, said, the people are cooperating as they always take care of the environment.
“We sensitized people on hand washing and open defecation. We also carried out weekly sanitation in the village.
“Our people are co-operating with us which make our job easy. They don’t defecate openly as they used to in the past,” he said.
He also said that the project has really changed their lives for good.
Also speaking, a resident of Wawan Rafi village, Mr. Joseph said the project has changed their lives for the better.
According to him, the people of the village now have clean water to drink as a result of the borehole.
That is why I found Sonala Olumhense’s piece: ‘Mixed Metaphors: Hypocrisy in high places,’ published in the Punch newspaper of September 16 a most unpleasant anti-Buhari article to be written by a journalist. The piece reeked of hate and political mischief and is nowhere close to what one may call ‘criticism’ or ‘informed opinion.’ It falls unquestionably among commentaries aimed at stopping President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election plan.
.First he declared former Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, ‘A certificate-forger’ and goes on to say it was an indication of “the weakness of the anti-corruption claims of the government.” Now let’s look at the issues. The Department of State Services, DSS and the Nigerian Senate were supposed to clear all ministerial nominees. President Muhammadu Buhari did not employ the staff of the DSS, and it is not the job of the DG, which is a political appointment, to do the actual verification, but that of operation staff. So, what it means is that Buhari inherited an ill-equipped and incompetent DSS. But Olumhense chose to ignore that fact and preferred to blame it on a so-called weakness of the anti-corruption war.
It is curious that the writer also chose to ignore the complicity of the Senate headed by Bukola Saraki, which has worked more in opposition to the ruling party than for it. In more established democracies, the job of ministerial screening is not left to the security agencies alone. It is one of the most important jobs of the senate. But the writer conveniently left out the senate and blames Buhari, what pathetic mischief!
To show that Buhari is the target of the article, he quickly jumps on the president, accusing him of collecting ‘a N45m gift from a shadowy political group,’ referring, of course, to the purchase of presidential nomination form by a youth group-the Nigerian Consolidation Ambassadors Network(NCAN).
The writer called the form purchase as a ‘scam’ because the group ‘made the payment only one day after the formal announcement of dates for the APC primaries.’ He described the president’s action as ‘a shame’, wondering why the ‘president of a democracy would accept a gift of this nature from a dubious and dangerous source.’
It beats the mind that any responsible public commentator, much more a columnist of a respectable newspaper, would use such derogatory and judgmental terms to describe legitimate civil actions of fellow citizens. He condemned innocent citizens as criminals without providing any shred of evidence! It could be acceptable to slant information, news or opinion. But it is unacceptable in journalistic practice to twist or ignore facts.
The NCAN is made up of Nigerian youths who on their own raised funds to purchase the presidential nomination form for the man they believe is the right person to lead their country at this time. They are also not a shadowy group because Nigerians saw their faces on television, and no media has reported yet that any one of them is on the wanted list of EFCC or ICPC either now or in the past.
In any case, if the president’s action was undesirable, why are the presidential aspirants of the main opposition party-the PDP, also getting groups buy nomination forms for them? The answer is they all want to appear as being loved by the people the way president Buhari is loved.
Nigerians contributed money for the president’s campaign in 2015, but we’re yet to hear or read any report alleging the president used his office to unduly favour anyone.
If the writer cares about facts, then let me educate him about what happened in 2003 in Anambra State. I was the bureau chief of the Punch newspaper in Enugu at the time and I was the one who reported the story for the Punch. It wasn’t Ngige who rigged the election or claimed the election was rigged. It was Chris Uba (not Andy Uba) who claimed he rigged the election in favour of Ngige when he was fighting to remove him(Ngige) as governor because he didn’t do the bidding of the political god-fathers. Uba made the claim to ridicule and undermine Ngige.
The piece also described the appointment of Yusuf Bichi as DG DSS as an appointment “for a corrupt power cabal” because it did not, to him, showed the president cared about federal character. First the writer deliberately failed to acknowledge that the DG DSS is a political appointee, and that the president could choose anyone he likes so long such person is qualified.
He also mischievously described the appointment of Bichi as a “rebuke” of the Vice President who appointed Mathew Seiyefa. Pray, in what way does it represent a repudiation of the VP? Seiyefa was only appointed in acting capacity-meaning he may or may not be confirmed as substantive DG.
Moreover, all the cry about the appointment reflecting Buhari’s tribal politics is only based on sentiments and the existing narrative of marginalization by some interest groups in the country. If Buhari is guilty of sectional politics with the appointment of Bichi, then all previous presidents are as guilty. You only need to look back at the people who occupied the position under previous administrations and you will see they are all nepotist in that regard.
When Olusegun Obasanjo was president, the DG DSS was his brother Kayode Are. Umaru Yar’Adua appointed Afakriya Gadzama from the North as his DG while Goodluck Jonathan appointed Ita Ekpeyong.
I am not justifying such appointments, but only saying there is no reason to demonize Buhari over the issue and on similar appointments.
Olumhense is also piqued because the APC announced VP Osinbajo will represent Buhari at proposed presidential debates in the 2019 elections. What would the writer have said if the APC had stated it presidential candidate would not participate in any debate? It is no doubt desirable if Buhari makes himself available for any debate at all. But this is a man seeking re-election, not presenting himself for the first time.
Nigerians would have the opportunity to hear from him during the campaign and make up their minds on his suitability or otherwise. If the president is unpopular as the writer seems to suggest, what would scare him more is the campaign run, and not a debate on television.
In the true spirit of political hatchet which the piece represents, the writer throws in the sales line: “Buyer beware: If you advocate or vote Buhari, you write your own epitaph: “Here lies the fool who closed his eyes and sold his soul.” Need I say more?
