At a time FIFA president was supposed to come from Africa especially to Nigeria given that Africa was the next after Europe (which has produced eight presidents since the establishment of FIFA in 1904) in six regional grouped confederations namely, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America and North and Central America, Odimegwu Onwumere writes that the continent blew the opportunity due to perceived years of acrimony that exist among the football stakeholders and groups on the continent

All eyes were on Africa in 2015 to produce the president of the International Federation of Association Football otherwise known as FIFA in February 2016. The move was to replace Sepp Blatter who ruled the football governing body from 1998-2015.

Analysts believed that the president of FIFA position was lopsided; it favoured Europe than any continent in the world whereas from 1904 the body was founded and headquartered in Zurich with national associations as members, there were six regional grouped confederations namely, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America and North and Central America and the Caribbean, but Europe dominated the position.

Checks revealed that eight presidents that have ruled FIFA came from Europe except Havelange, who came from Brazil, South America. Others are Robert Guerin (1904-1906), Daniel Woolfull (1906-1918), Jules Rimet (1921-1954), Rodolphe Seeldrayers (1954-1955), Arthur Drewry (1955-1961), Stanley Rous (1961-1974), Joao Havelange (1974-1998) and Sepp Blatter (1998-2015). Many of those who hyped Africa should produce the FIFA president, looked up to Nigeria for that position.

But the clarion call came at a time when FIFA was battling corruption hypothetical to be in the areas of fraud and money laundering clamoured to be the highest in the history of FIFA. There were allegations on the neck of former representatives of FIFA concerning their involvement in the 2018 FIFA World Cup offer, which consumed Blatter and he resigned as FIFA president. Many believed that Nigeria was known globally to score low in Corruption Perception Index and might not be regarded by the world for the position. However, enthusiasts overlooked all that and bent on a former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, to vie for the FIFA presidency.

John Fashanu, a basket ball legend was among the early persons that fronted Kalu. Apart from Fashanu, a group like United Africa for Sports Development showed their interest in Kalu. The group even went further to induce the government of Muhammadu Buhari to support Kalu’s candidature. All of these happened without Kalu formally declaring his interest. However through one Mrs. Rubby Obinna, Kalu in a media statement described those calling on him to contest as great minds discussing great ideas. Correspondingly, a former captain of a national team, Segun Odegbami threw in his weight for the plum job and said in a statement through one Ade Adeagbo, Head Campaign Team of Odegbami, that he was able-bodied for the leadership of FIFA. Both Kalu and Odegbami had track records in the business of sports.

Beginning of problems

There was an emergency meeting of the executive committee of National Football Federation, NFF, held in Port-Harcourt on Monday, 7th September, 2015, at the Hotel Presidential. The NFF disclosed that there was enough room for anyone who wanted to declare his intention for the FIFA leadership, but should consult properly to avert denigration at the international level. The Nigerian football body gave point how two Nigerian football administrators lost elections at FIFA/CAF Executive Committees because they did not consult very well.

In that year, a Chairman of Media and Publicity of the NFF, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande released a statement published on the NFF official website which further demanded that aspirants from Nigeria had to produce some documents that would show they were competent for the position. Such documents the NFF said that candidates should produce in order to be properly endorsed included:

  • Letter of endorsement from the relevant State Football Association.
  • Provision of evidence of fulfillment of the FIFA Presidential election eligibility provisions.
  • Endorsement by continental football governing body, CAF (the NFF can facilitate meetings with CAF top hierarchy).
  • Letter of support from the National Sports Commission.

But in a swift reaction, Odegbami rejected the NFF conditions. He wrote a strappingly worded letter regarded as a letter of protest directed to NFF President Amaju Pinnick. Odegbami threw tantrums at the leadership of the NFF describing the body as creating “obstacles” to his interest in lieu of being happy and proud to push his interest and application forward. In short, Odegbami called on the NFF leadership to be prepared to purge themselves of corruption when the “upcoming FIFA” emerged. The letter was copied to President Muhammadu Buhari; General Secretary, FIFA Zurich; President, CAF, Alhaji Issa Hayatou; and the media.

Media war

Odegbami’s letter threw him out of favour. When he noticed this, he resorted to media war to send his countenance across the world. He engaged the NFF and Kalu in persistent media war. On one occasion, Mrs. Obinna in a press statement extolled Kalu as Pillar of Sports in Africa but said that Odegbami, who was a former skipper of the Green Eagles, should leave Kalu out of his failure to get enough support for his bid to become the FIFA president.

Mrs. Obinna said this with a view that Odegbami hinged his failure on Kalu, apart from the NFF. Apart from his letter, Odegbami’s problem could have started when his name was missing on Monday, October 26, 2015, deadline for the submission of nomination form for candidates vying for the presidency of FIFA. An ex-FIFA executive committee member, Amos Adamu, who tremendously endorsed Kalu, shared in Odegbami’s affront, just as the President of the body, Amaju Pinnick was not left alone.

Odegbami who was also a former chairman of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) nearly went barmy for this reason as no day passed by without him appearing in the media to further his campaign of denigration against Kalu or any of the marked persons or groups he felt were behind his torment not to get the backing of other African countries in his quest to be elected FIFA boss. Conversely, indications emerged that Odegbami was incorrect with his claims against Kalu. Rather, he was just powerless to win the required backing of five member associations. But instead he would accept that his frail political standing and perceived sadistic nature were behind his failure, he rather claimed that the NFF did not give him the support that he needed.

Forecasters said that he was wrong as a report in The Nation, October 27 2015, said he was endorsed by the NFF to run for the FIFA presidency in February, but he could not muster nominations from five African soccer federations by Monday’s deadline to enable him stand for the FIFA elections. Odegbami spoke haphazardly that the NFF offered him its support too late to meet the deadline. Again, he blamed himself, saying, “That was their reaction to my letter sent to them two months ago. It is preposterous.”

The difficulty to come to term with Odegbami’s uncertain-statements was that the NFF he claimed was aloof gave him its support, at least. But he preferred to deny this fact and accepted it later or said that the support came very late. He exposed his boisterous self again and said that he had criticised de cream de la crème in the world of football. He started with his uncouth criticism of what he said was the “long-standing Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou.”

Odegbami who had a long rope for those he believed were behind his aborted FIFA presidential ambition without holding anybody or group liable said that his biased standing against Hayatou might have counted against him. “Of course there are local politics within the Nigerian and African football system that pitches some of us against the established system,” he accepted. “I have been one of the most virulent critics of the perpetuity in office of Issa Hayatou and I knew I was not one of his best friends.”

Some commentators believed that Odegbami would have been better known if he was a writer on football critiques rather than his venture into football politics. A football commentator who would not want the name in print had warned Odegbami to watch his words. The commentator said, “Odegbami should watch his words. It was a primary school mistake for him to have aspired to contest in the first place when he never did any homework on such post; or how many times did he work for FIFA before now, in any capacity? He could not have expected to get favour from the same people he had been fighting for years.”

While Odegbami claimed that a mountain of persons and groups fostered to his failure, the NFF warned him to stop his “campaign of calumny” against the federation and prominent Nigerian football figures, Premium Times, November 2 2015, reported. The source said, “It also asked the ex-footballer to face up to the reality that he undid his own campaign for a slot at the FIFA Presidency.” Adamu averred in a statement by his media aide, Gabriel Omonhinmin, on Thursday, October 29 2015, that it was not his duty as one of the executive members of CAF to help Odegbami secure the support of four other African countries after he was supposedly endorsed by the NFF for the top job. Adamu dismissed Odegbami’s allegation with a wave of hand and said it was a tissue of lies and cheap blackmail, stressing that such frivolous allegation was not to be expected from a man of Odegbami’s standing.

“It was absolutely the duty of Odegbami to go round other African countries to campaign and sell whatever programmes he had, that would improve not only the lot of Africa football but global football generally. If he has done this successfully, I am sure he would have gotten the support of four other African countries to contest the FIFA presidency as stipulated by FIFA’s status,” Adamu said.

The President of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick told journalists on October 28 2015, after an emergency committee meeting. According to Vanguard report of October 29 2015, “Pinnick said the NFF after getting the final government endorsement of Odegbami last Thursday forwarded same to him because he was the person that substantially complied with the laid down requirements needed for anybody to be presented as a candidate for the election slated to take place in February, 2016.”

Adding, Pinnick said as a federation the members were just to nominate, which they thought that Odegbami had gotten the other endorsements. “Ours was to be the icing on the cake and at a point he said all he needed was our nomination and we thought he had other nominations because he is a very popular person not just in Africa but beyond,” said Pinnick. “I did my best as president of NFF.”

For Yahaya-Kwande, “We are thoroughly disappointed at the conduct of Chief Odegbami since his failed bid. He was his own big problem, with the letter he wrote castigating the leadership of FIFA and CAF, which he brazenly copied to these eminent figures. We consider Chief Odegbami an elder statesman in Nigeria football, but he has been throwing a lot of tantrums lately. He has been accusing very prominent and illustrious persons of so many things, and imagining himself to be a saint.”

Then-again Yahaya-Kwande who’s said to be a member of the House of Representatives added, “The NFF is aware that Odegbami reached out to the Football Associations of Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Zambia. How is his failure the fault of the NFF? They told him to his face that they were opposed to him because of his statements against the President of CAF, who is now Acting FIFA President.”

Supposed reason Odegbami joined the FIFA race

Making Odegbami a liar of his claim, from some quarters emerged information that it was his gullibility and ‘let down’ on NFF and other personalities that marred his ambition; also he had a mentality that since Kalu is a Nigerian politician, he (Kalu) might not get the needed support from Nigerians who see their politicians not to live up to leadership expectations. But Odegbami misfired, because he did not know that Nigerians believed that Kalu had a clean bill as a politician.

According to a commentator, “Odegbami played a spoiler game. Immediately he heard about Orji Uzor Kalu’s interest to vie for FIFA presidency, he jumped out of his cave without a proper consultation. Now he is complaining. Why won’t he complain when he thought that he was clean than Orji Uzor Kalu. As if Odegbami was a saint while Orji Uzor Kalu was the devil, Odegbami was too judgmental against everybody and every institution of football.”

Yahaya-Kwande said, “Odegbami has this strange idea that everyone else is tainted and he is not! He worked against himself. It is not NFF’s problem; it is his problem, entirely.”

Presidency’s theoretical connection

It was observed that Odegbami’s outing had political colouration. Odegbami at a press briefing said, “I think the Nigerian government must call for an inquiry into the circumstance surrounding the whole episode because I believe we just wasted a rare opportunity for a Nigerian to take a shot at the FIFA presidency.”

But a source exploded, saying, “Odegbami was endorsed secretly by the President of Nigeria through the All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders who were majorly his kiths and kin, thinking that he could play the politics of FIFA without considering whether he had what obtains to march other contestants. Odegbami choose to interrupt when Nigerians could have queued behind Kalu who, at least, had huge connection all over the world and, the money as well.”

According to pointers made by Yahaya-Kwande, Nigeria was the only country where more than one person showed interest in the race; it’s also true that Kalu ‘indicated’ his interest before Odegbami did. Yet, the authorities eventually endorsed Odegbami. But in ThisDay, October 28 2015 edition, “Odegbami said his quest to vie for the coveted position of FIFA’s topmost position was doomed to fail from the start as the lofty intention was treated with disbelief.”

Adamu challenged Odegbami to name the people who treated his ambition with disbelief, or those who sabotaged his bid right from the word go. He asked Odegbami that if he was serious, why was he not in Cairo, Egypt for the CAF meeting to personally lobby the African countries he thought were favourably disposed to supporting his ambition? “He said the ex-international’s claim that Mr. Pinnick, who was in Cairo, Egypt, promised to use his weight to get the required five endorsements, was laughable and childish,” reported the source.

Accepting his lies

Odegbami later made frantic effort to accept as lies his claims that some persons and groups were behind his aborted FIFA presidency aspiration. In ThisDay, October 28 2015, Odegbami said he did not want to say that the process was sabotaged from the word go but that’s the truth staring the world in their faces. He also said that he thought his candidature was shrouded in disbelief with some people asking, “Why him, he cannot win, he is wasting our time, among other insinuations.”

But by then Kalu did not meet the Monday, October 26 deadline for the submission of FIFA presidency bid. In a statement signed by his Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, Kalu commended football stakeholders across the world who supported him despite not making an official bid.

His words, “I feel humbled and honoured with the widespread call for me to vie for the position of FIFA president. I sincerely appreciate the show of love and support demonstrated by African countries of endorsements despite my decision not to submit a bid.

“I particularly remain grateful to FIFA President, Sepp Blatter and his team for personally acknowledging my capability to take the world football body to enviable heights.”

Kalu in the statement revealed that he decided to focus his attention and resources on his business and humanitarian activities due to the economic challenges in Nigeria. Odegbami also failed in his FIFA presidential bid as he couldn’t get the five required backing after the support from the NFF supposedly came too late. Accepting his wrong soundtrack Odegbami said, “I think the whole exercise is all about bad blood, I did it. Nobody asked me to do it. It just occurred to me that throughout the whole exercise nobody knew what the rules say about vying for the office of FIFA president, which is not more than get five endorsements and your federation’s backing.” He concluded, “Right now it’s over for me, it’s a personal thing. I started the race. Nigeria did not start the race for me. I took full responsibility for everything.”

The Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), Nigeria chapter on Friday in Abuja said it was putting in place an investment structure for the establishment of a world-class eye hospital in Nigeria.

Mr Ademola Adesoye, the Second Vice District Governor of  Lion Club District 404 B2, who made this known at a news conference said that the hospital would treat not less than 50 million Nigerians annually.

Adesoye said that all plans had been concluded to build the hospital which would be located in Abuja so that all regions of the country could access it.

He said that the centre of excellence, apart from checking capital flight would also attract patients from other African countries.

He said that the hospital, which would have specialised personnel and facilities for advanced medical investigation and treatment, would carry out operations like corneal transplant among others.

He said that corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting “is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue.’’

“Lion Club in Nigeria has four major districts, that is District 404A1, District 404 A2, District 404 B1, District 404 B2 and each district have its own specific assignment to carry out in its region.

“For the purpose of collective service, we will be putting up a world-class eye hospital in Abuja which will be better than the only one we have in Africa located in Kenya.

“It is going to do transplants where we will remove the whole eye and put another eye and those are the kind of things the hospital will do here.

“We have done many projects in other parts of Nigeria but the one we are putting up in Abuja will collectively serve everybody.

“Once this project is here, everybody across Nigeria can access it even people from West Africa and other African nations too,’’ he said.

Adesoye said that the construction of the hospital had started, adding that the group had also started capacity building for doctors, creating awareness and screening of professionals.

He said that the club had in the past sponsored blind people for operations and had carried out humanitarian services in other areas.

He said that the group would train more doctors to specialise in eye treatment in order not to import doctors from abroad.

He added that the club would do that in collaboration with the Nigerian Medical Association and government before the end of this lion’s year –  which is from July 1 2018 to June 2019.

Adesoye said that apart from the project in Abuja, each district would carry out its own, adding that District 404 B2 just signed an MoU with teaching hospital in Ekiti.

He said this was for the building of a diabetic centre to touch the lives of not less 20 million Nigerians within that district alone as its contribution for this year.

The International President, Ms Gudrun Yngvadottir said that Lions Clubs provided grant funding to assist Lions districts in developing and implementing large-scale humanitarian projects.

Yngvadottir said that these humanitarian grants help Lions expand their outreach and increase their impact within local and global communities to serve even more people in need around the world.

She said that in addition to serving locally, Lions support five global service areas which included vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer and diabetes.

She said that her visit to Nigeria was to thank the lions for the enormous contributions to humanity, adding that the aim was to serve more than 200 million people.

She said that since Nigeria was the biggest country in the continent, its humanitarian effort of lions would go a long way to make a difference in tackling crisis.

Yngvadottir urged them to continue to be relevant to communities to make a difference in the lives of people.

Pakistan’s Opposition Leader Jailed For 10 Days Ahead Of By-Elections

Pakistani Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif was jailed on Saturday for 10 days after being arrested in a corruption case.

His lawyer said, that the development meant that Sharif would not be able to campaign for his party ahead of crucial by-elections on Oct. 14.

The by-elections are for 11 parliamentary seats and 19 provincial assembly seats.

Sharif is the younger brother of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was sentenced earlier this year to 10 years in prison by an anti-corruption court after the Supreme Court removed him from power.

Friday arrest of Sharif by agents of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Lahore involved corruption in a low-cost housing scheme when Sharif was Chief Minister of Punjab province.

A NAB court on Saturday heard charges that Sharif, in 2014, illegally cancelled a contract with a construction company and sought to award it to another company for a bribe.

However, Sharif’s counsel, Azam Nazir Tarar said his client was remanded in custody for 10 days to be interrogated.

Hundreds of activists from Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz gathered outside the court, chanting pro-Sharif slogans as police and army Rangers guarded the venue.

Sharif denies any wrongdoing and his brother has denounced corruption cases against him and other party leaders as politically motivated.

Tarar said that Sharif was improperly arrested on a warrant that was kept secret.

Sharif went to the court for questioning in another corruption case involving a water purification scheme but instead was arrested on the housing project warrant.

“They cannot arrest the leader of the opposition in this manner,’’ the lawyer said.

Sharif was arrested 10 days before the July 25, general election won by cricket star turned politician, Imran Khan, leading the new government.

He was released from prison in September pending an appeal.

The Sharifs’ Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) came second in the general election.

PML-N denounced the polls as rigged, alleging that the military and courts tipped the scale in favour of Khan’s party, a charge the army and judiciary denied.

PML-N also said that the arrest of Sharif was intended to weaken the party before by-elections to be held on Oct. 14.

The voting could affect the slim majority Khan’s coalition government holds in parliament, though many of the constituencies are considered strongholds of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The contests are considered to be closer in the provincial assemblies and could result in the PML-N winning back control of Punjab.

The Nasarawa State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has elected Mr Labaran Maku as its candidate for the 2019 governorship election in the state.

Maku, a former Minister of Information, was elected on Saturday at Uke, Karu Local government Area and venue of the party primaries through voice affirmation by delegates drawn from the 147 electoral wards and 13 local government areas of the state.

Alhaji Musa Saidu, APGA state chairman and chief returning officer for the election, said that Maku was the only aspirant who indicated interest to vie for the position on the platform of the party.

Saidu, however, said that in accordance with the relevant laws and electoral guidelines, the aspirant had to be affirmed by 501 delegates drawn from across the state.

According to Saidu, the 501 delegates comprised 462 statutory and 39 special delegates participating in the exercise.

Mr Adams Gwamna, a delegate and house of representatives candidate for Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency therefore, moved a motion for the affirmation of Maku as the governorship candidate of the party and he was seconded by Mr Emmanuel Alu from Lafia.

Saidu, thereafter, declared Maku as the candidate of the party for the 2019 governorship election in the state.

Maku, in his acceptance speech, thanked the delegates and the party for giving him the mandate to fly the party’s flag during the governorship polls.

He said that his desire for peace, security, economic development and social justice was what motivated him to vie for the state’s governorship.

“I am offering myself to the people of Nasarawa State with the believe that God’s mercy has prepared and positioned me over the years to come and rescue the people of the state from the grip of poverty, hunger, insecurity and deprivation,’’ he said.

Population Of People With Disability In Nigeria Hits 19m – Official

Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has estimated that no fewer than 19 million persons are living with disabilities in the country.

Chairman of the Commission, Eze Duruiheoma, announced this at the 73rd UN General Assembly General Discussion of Agenda 28 on Social Development at the UN headquarters in New York.

World Bank estimates that one billion people, or 15 per cent of the world’s population, experience some form of disabilities and the prevalence is higher for developing countries.

The population chief said Nigeria had existing policy that reserved certain percentage of vacancies for the disabled, adding the corporate organisations were also encouraged to reserve two per cent for the disabled population.

“As a result, government is implementing measures to promote and enhance the entrepreneurial skills of many of our 19 million Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

“This is executed through training in various vocations and provision of relevant tools to enable them to embark on economic ventures of their choice.

“Furthermore, corporate organisations in Nigeria are encouraged to reserve two per cent of their vacancies to PWDs in support of the existing policy in the public sector.”

He said Nigeria recognised the importance of implementing policies that bridge social inequality gap through poverty eradication, social integration, full employment and decent work that target especially the disability population.

“As part of our commitment to the continuous implementation of the relevant provisions of the 2002 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the National Senior Citizen Act 2018 early this year.

“The Act mandates all tiers of government, including institutions in the country, to establish National Senior Citizens Centres to ensure proper care, training, integration, orientation and re-orientation of senior citizens.

“This highlights the need for, and ensuring full utilisation of potential and expertise of the elderly, while recognising the benefits of increased experience through age, as well as strengthening intergenerational solidarity,” Duruiheoma said.

Similarly, a pre-retirement vocational training is being provided to officers prior to disengagement from the public service to enhance investment of retirement benefits and guarantee income security as a means of eradicating poverty, he said.

“Waivers are also extended to treatment provided for the elderly in government hospitals in some states in the country,” the Nigerian population chief said.

He said Nigeria’s recently-revised National Population Policy now accorded special attention to ageing and the aged, and provided strategies for improving their welfare through investment in healthy ageing and integration into life-long learning programmes.

He added that the Nigerian Government remained irreversibly committed to implementing social policies that impacted positively on the lives and well-being of all Nigerians, regardless of social status, creed and affiliations.

“This is based on President Muhammadu Buhari’s conviction that the implementation of people-centred and all inclusive sustainable development policies remain a strong parameter for measuring the success of any credible government,” he said.

He explained that Nigeria had begun implementation of an ambitious three-year medium-term economic development strategy: ‘Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP)’.

Duruiheoma said the ERGP would fast-track the realisation of the objectives of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the overarching social-economic goals of Agenda 2063 of the African Union.

“Fundamentally, EGRP was designed to place the country’s economy on a trajectory of upward growth, sound social infrastructure, global competitiveness, as well as ensuring environmental sustainability for all Nigerians.

He said a National Social Investment Office has been established within the Office of the Vice President, to guarantee effective coordination, implementation and to facilitate access to a broad range of social development opportunities and benefits for all citizens.

Duruiheoma said a potent feature of the social welfare programmes related to the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme, saying it had continued to provide monthly stipends to one million poor and vulnerable households in Nigeria.

He said a veritable component of the CCT was the concept of ‘Market Money’, disbursting  micro credit loans with a zero interest rate to another batch of one million market traders across Nigeria.

“Bridging youth empowerment inequality through provision of jobs and development of innovative ideas is at the very core of our government policies and programmes.

“Consequently, the N-Power Youth Employment Scheme, created to facilitate employment generation for a total of 500,000 graduates in the country, has successfully deployed over 400,000 graduates to the agricultural, health and teaching sectors all over the country.

“The non-graduate component that targets annual employment of 100,000 artisans has also created jobs for more than 30,000 youth till date,” Duruiheoma said.

He said the Nigerian Government was scaling up the creation of innovative hubs through the establishment of technological smart villages across the country to unleash the innovative potential of youth and bridge the technology divide in the country.

Duruiheoma said in terms of mainstreaming youth into all aspects of governance, Buhari had created the Office of Special Adviser on Youth Matters and signed into law the ‘Not-Too-Young-To-Run’ bill.

“This has undoubtedly triggered more interests from the Nigerian youth population in the office of the President in the coming presidential election in February 2019,” he said.

He pledged Nigeria’s usual cooperation to the global community, adding the country remained committed to its international obligations, programmes and strategies that promoted social development for citizens.

FIFA Suspends Sierra Leone FA For Government Interference

FIFA has suspended the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) with immediate effect, due to government interference in soccer affairs, the sport’s world governing body said  on Friday.

FIFA’s decision came after it wrote to the African country’s sports minister expressing “grave concern” about the removal of SLFA President Isha Johansen and General Secretary Christopher Kamara.

FIFA had asked for both individuals to be allowed to access SLFA premises without delay to ensure that the operations of the association, including FIFA-funded projects, were not jeopardised.

“The suspension will be lifted once SLFA and its recognised leadership have confirmed to FIFA that the SLFA administration, premises, accounts and communication channels are under their control once again

“Following its suspension, SLFA has lost all its membership rights as defined in article 13 of the FIFA Statutes.

” The SLFA’s national and affiliated club teams are no longer entitled to take part in international competitions until the suspension is lifted,” FIFA said in a statement.

Last month, the country’s anti-corruption commission followed through on a threat to raid the SLFA’s offices amid allegations of match-fixing involving the national team.

FIFA are also looking at matches as far back as a World Cup qualifier against South Africa in 2008 as part of their own investigation into the match-fixing allegations.

Both Johansen and Kamara deny any wrongdoing.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to investigate and prosecute directors that led to the collapse of the defunct Skye bank.

The minister said this in a statement by the Head, Communication and Public Affairs of the NDIC, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, on Friday in Abuja.

According to the statement, Ahmed made the call when she visited the Management of NDIC, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim in Abuja.

She also urged the CBN to prosecute all other executive management that contributed to the collapse of other Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in the country.

The minister expressed concern about the spate of non-performing loans in the banking industry.

She said the bail-out of distressed financial institutions was necessary in the interest of the stability of the banking system.

She also emphasised the need for investigation and prosecution of delinquent Board Directors and Executive management of financial intuitions who abused the trust placed on them by depositors.

She urged the CBN and the NDIC to use the recent failure of the defunct Skye Bank Plc as an opportunity to deal with those found culpable in the course of the investigations.

According to the minister, this will deter other operators as the Federal Government will not treat such serious infractions with levity.

The minister commended the NDIC for the thoroughness of its bank examination reports which was acknowledged in the banking system.

She also expressed appreciation to the Corporation for the prompt payment of its contribution under the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

She said: “The Federal Government regards the NDIC as a critical player towards the actualisation of its Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP).

Earlier, the NDIC boss assured the Minister that the Corporation would ensure the recovery of all the debts owed the defunct Skye Bank and other banks in liquidation.

Ibrahim also expressed the Corporation’s determination to ensure prosecution of the perpetrators of the defunct bank by appropriate authorities.

“The primary concern of the NDIC is to ensure the safety of depositors’ funds and minimise the disruption of banking services.

“Since 1991, the aggregate payment to depositors, creditors and shareholders of 46 closed banks amounted to N11.75 billion, out of which the total payments to insured depositors of DMBs is N8.252 billion.

“A total of N2.89 billion was paid out to insured depositors of Microfinance Banks (MFBs) covering 81,657 individual accounts, while N69.60 million was also paid to insured depositors of Primary Mortgage Banks (PMBs).

“A total number of 46 DMBs are currently in liquidation, “Ibrahim stated.

The NDIC boss assured the minister that the Corporation had used the most appropriate failure resolution option in the case of the defunct Skye Bank.

He further said the corporation ensured that over 6,000 jobs were saved while its depositors continued to operate their accounts with the new Polaris Bank Limited which assumed its entire assets and liabilities.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, on Friday said that Nigeria was gradually emerging as a centre for technology innovations cutting across all sectors.

The minister stated this in Lagos during the “Technology As a Catalyst: Ease of Doing Business 2018 Conference’’, organised by Perchstone and Graeys, Knowledge Resources Ltd.

Shittu described Nigeria as the largest and fastest growing ICT market in the world.

“World’s biggest technology companies are strengthening their investments in the country because Nigeria has made important stride toward improving most of its infrastructure compared to other African countries.

“It is no longer news that Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in enabling the diversification of the country’s economy.

“Nigeria has witnessed accelerated socio-economic development resulting from the penetration of technology into all facets of its society, ‘’ he said.

Shittu said that infrastructure had made a net contribution of around 1 per cent point to Nigeria’s improved per capital growth performance, although unreliable power supply held growth back.

He noted that ICT was a catalyst to development and there was need for the country to move from resource-based economy to a robust ICT-driven one.

The minister said that the ministry, among other things, was planning to formulate forward-looking policies that would propel the Nigerian economy to a digitalised one.

“The ICT strategic roadmap seeks to address both public and private sector infrastructure deficit in Nigeria’s ICT sector for substantial improvement in quality of service.

“Some key aspects of the plan are improved broadband penetration, internet coverage boost ICT education, enhance satellite communication, curbing cybercrime and ensuring that ICT contributes a bigger share of national revenue.

“Several steps have been initiated by the government toward an improved national information technology infrastructure to attract investments into the country in spite of the numerous challenges bedeviling the sector, ‘’ Shittu said.

He said that the ministry had embarked on many e-government initiatives including open data portal, government contact centre, among other initiatives which would lead to efficient delivery of government services to the citizenry.

The minister said that the ministry was committed to increasing broadband penetration to 30 per cent to accelerate telephone usage in rural areas and connect communities to economic opportunities through improved ICT infrastructure.

Shittu said that although power issues, right of way, low digital literacy, multiple taxation, poor linkage between ICT research, academia and industry, were still major challenges obstructing the plans mapped out for Nigeria to be a true smart state.

He said that the ministry through its industry working group on multiple taxation, would continue to maintain a dialogue with organisations regarded as major players at the federal, state and local levels to stop further imposition of taxes.

Shittu said that in addressing the issue of forex, the ministry had engaged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to include telecommunications as part of the CBN priority list for accessing forex.
