Deputy President David Mabuza has announced that government will prioritise the upgrading and maintenance of health infrastructure in an effort to deal with the challenge of ageing and dilapidated infrastructure in public health facilities.

Mabuza made the remark while highlighting the outcomes of the two-day Presidential Health Summit held in Boksburg.

During the summit, Mabuza said, it was agreed that in the context of fiscal constraints, provinces will be expected to prioritise their financial resource allocations in a manner that ensures that the delivery of health care is not compromised.

“More importantly, this summit pointed out that we need to develop a sustainable financing model for our health system. We will commence with this task immediately.

“National Treasury will be seized with this task to ensure that this model is finalised within a short space of time.

“As we lay a solid foundation for the implementation of the NHI, government will prioritise the upgrading and maintenance of health infrastructure to deal with the challenges of ageing and dilapidated infrastructure.”

Mabuza said government will support the implementation of the health facility management plan to ensure that hospitals and clinics are upgraded and maintained.

“We will seek to draw on this compact as we fast-track the licensing of all health facilities in readiness for implementation of the NHI. It has drawn together a remarkable cross section of South Africans – and many of our international partners – to grapple with a challenge that is fundamental to the happiness and prosperity of our people.”

The Deputy President highlighted to delegates that the democratic State was grappling with a struggling health system that was inherited from a government that denied the majority of citizens basic services.

“In recasting our health system, we are helping to reshape our society, understanding that we are engaged in a far broader struggle for the fundamental transformation of our economy and our country.

“We approach our task understanding that health is not merely a function of hospitals that are properly staffed, clinics that are well equipped, health professionals that are effectively trained, and medicines that are available and affordable.”

He commended the summit for setting the country on a new path towards the provision of quality health care for all.

“The path we have chosen is irreversible. We are at the point of no return. We must be bold, determined, and focused on the goals of equality and universal health coverage for all.

“Brick by brick, we must build this house together. We must walk this journey together, side by side, with all our partners gathered here today to ensure that the vision of a unified health system is achieved in our lifetime.”

NHI

Mabuza said the Presidency plans to use the outcomes of the summit as a springboard to dramatically improve the health system in preparation for the implementation of the NHI.

“We have heard over the last two days the voices of those who work at the frontline of health care delivery.”

While some have lamented the state of things, most have sought solutions, and all have expressed a commitment to move forward. We are fortunate in that we are not alone in many of the challenges we face. The lessons we have learnt from the World Health Organization among others are instructive as we plan our version of universal health coverage.”

The Deputy President said the State intended to develop a compact among all key stakeholders, including government, health providers, academics, health system users, labour, private sector and civil society.

“This compact will provide guidance and assist in the implementation of critical tasks, such as updating the quality improvement plans for all our health facilities to ensure a better service experience for all our citizens.”

The compact, Mabuza said, will assist with the development of a human resource operational plan to allow us to correct the deficiencies in the system.

“This summit is the beginning of a new phase of cooperation and collaboration in undertaking the critical tasks that are needed to turn our health system around. We will confront many challenges along the way. At times, we will disagree. But, for the sake of the South African people, we will remain committed to the fulfilment of this great responsibility.”

A new campaign encouraging people to greet and thank public transport workers, such as bus captains and rail engineers, was unveiled on Sunday morning in Singapore.

Called the Public Transport Workers’ Appreciation Campaign, it features outdoor posters, walkway banners, bus advertisements and digital engagement efforts, encouraging the public to show appreciation to these unsung heroes who work tirelessly round the clock and behind the scenes to get Singaporeans to their destinations quickly and comfortably.

MP for Tampines GRC Baey Yam Keng, who is Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Culture, Community and Youth, launched the campaign on Sunday morning.

Mr Baey, who visited public transport workers at Tampines MRT station and bus interchange, said: “These workers work very hard, rain or shine, to provide efficient, reliable service, whether through bus or the MRT.

“If you can spare a thought, give them a smile. Greet them. When the bus captain waits for you, just say ‘thank you’ as you board the bus. It will really make their day, and these gestures will motivate them to deliver better service to the public.”

He hopes people will make it a habit to express their appreciation all year round, and not just for the campaign’s one-month duration.

“The most direct result to see is that our public transport workers feel appreciated.”

Commuters can also show their appreciation by sharing their messages online with the hashtag #ThankYouPTWorkers.

The campaign is jointly organised by the Land Transport Authority and Ministry of Transport.

It is supported by the National Transport Workers’ Union, Singapore Kindness Movement, as well as public transport operators SBS Transit, SMRT, Tower Transit and Go-Ahead Singapore.

For failing to fulfil electioneering campaign promises by politicians since the return of democracy  in 1999, residents of a community in Kaduna have warned against bringing campaigns  to their villages so as not to deceive  them again.

The Chief of Unguwar Jatau in Igabi local government Area of Kaduna State, north western Nigeria said his subjects are tired of fake promises by Kaduna politicians, hence the need to tell them not to bring campaigns.

The community leader who was speaking with journalists who visited  the  village  said, “Kaduna politicians have failed us, because they failed to fulfil their campaign promises as they did  in 2015, we are tired of them”

According to the village head, they promised constructing good road, and providing them with other  social amenities which could improved the life of the rural dwellers.

”Politicians do usually come to the village during their political campaigns and convinced us to vote for them, which we do, but they never come back to see us”

“Once they came into power, they never remember us till when another political campaign comes again”

“I am calling on Kaduna politicians not to come to our village again for any political campaign.

“we have decided to stop participating in any politic, because we benefit nothing from it, The God that created us will surely help us one day, he remarked.

The chef said there was nothing members of the community had not done to persuade both past and present state and local government officials to come to their aid, yet nothing has changed.

“Due to lack of health centre, our  pregnant women prefer to giving  birth in dry season than in rainy season to avert suffering due to lack of access road.

He said, the only politician that they could listen to in 2019  is Senator Shehu Sani, saying that he has done what no any politician in Nigeria had ever done to them – for his effort in the renovation of Health Clinic in their community.

He said apart from him, he added, they would not want to see any politician that would bring campaign to their community.

One of the residents, Mrs Jummai Gideon  told journalists  that since the return of democracy in 1999 in Nigeria, many politicians had been coming for campaigns ,  and  they have been voting for them but  never contributed any thing to their lives.

“As for next year general election,we don’t want to see any politician in our community, this is simply because they have done nothing to improve lives of women and children in the community, she said.

Jummai said lack of potable  water, access road, skill acquisition programme for the youth and women in the village, are the major challenges facing  the community

Africa’s youngest billionaire, snatched a week ago off the street outside a luxury hotel in Tanzania, has returned home unharmed after being released by his kidnappers, police said on Saturday.

Mohammed Dewji, 43-year-old CEO of the METL Group family conglomerate, was seized as he arrived for a morning workout in Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam last week.

Forbes estimates his net worth as 1.5 billion dollars, making him Africa’s 17th richest man and its youngest billionaire.

Lazaro Mambosasa, Dar es Salaam’s police commander, told the media that Dewji was abandoned by his kidnappers in the city’s Gymkhana area at 2:30 a.m. local time.

Dewji had been held in a house in an area where police were about to conduct a house-to-house search, he said.

“He was tied legs, hands and face therefore he could not see.

”He could not identify the abductors throughout the period of captivity,” Mambosasa said. He had only bruises on his hands and feet where they were tied.

“He told us that they treated him very well and gave him food,” he said.

Dewji’s family had offered a reward of one billion Tanzania shillings (440,000 dollars) for information leading to his release, though it was not immediately clear how much the kidnappers had demanded.

Speaking at a news conference, Inspector-General of Police Simon Sirro said Dewji had told them the suspects spoke in English and “broken Swahili” and that a vehicle they had travelled on had foreign plates.

“The good thing is that we are communicating regularly with our colleagues at Interpol,” he told reporters.

Four weapons, including an assault rifle and numerous bullets, were found in the car, which was partially damaged in a botched attempt to destroy evidence, Sirro said.

On its Twitter feed, METL Group quoted Dewji as saying he had “returned home safely”, without providing more details about how he was freed or got away from his captors.

The company also quoted him thanking those who had worked for his release, including the police.

His abduction had caused consternation in the East African nation as he is one of its most prominent business executives and had been a member of parliament in the past.

METL Group is involved in a diverse range of manufacturing, farming, transport, infrastructure, agro-processing and telecoms businesses spanning 11 African countries.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest communal violence in Kasuwan Magani in Kaduna State which claimed 55 lives.

The president disclosed this in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday.

According to him, the frequent resort to bloodshed by Nigerians over misunderstandings that can be resolved peacefully is worrisome.

The President said: “No culture and religion support the disregard for the sanctity of life. Peaceful coexistence is necessary for the progress of any society and its wellbeing.’’

He further noted that without communal harmony, the environment for the conduct of “our everyday businesses would be impossible to achieve.”

Buhari explained that “violence cannot be an alternative to peace. On the contrary, reliance on violence leads to ultimate self-destruction.

“Violence is an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Embracing peace is a necessity.’’

While commending the Kaduna state government for its rapid response to the crisis, the President appealed to community leaders to engage in regular dialogue to nip imminent crises in the bud.

He admonished the people to develop the spirit of tolerance and patience at all times.

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmad Abdur-Rahman, had earlier confirmed that the police had arrested 22 suspects in connection with the communal crisis that engulfed Kasuwan Magani in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna state on Thursday.

Abdul-Rahaman said anti-riot and conventional policemen as well as a team of the state joint security operatives, Operation Yaki, despatched to the town had since restored normalcy.

According to him, he has also visited the town and engaged youth leaders, traditional and religious leaders in the efforts to stop the crisis and prevent its spread.

He noted that the timely imposition of curfew by the Kaduna State Government also helped to douse tension in the area.

As the world prepares to mark the 2018 World Polio day, Rotary International clubs have advocated for clean and hygienic environment to end transmission of polio.

Flagging off the World Polio day programme on Saturday in Abuja, the incident manager, National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio, Director National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Usman Adamu said the environmental component was key to eradicating polio in Nigeria.

He said though there was no reported case of polio for the past 25 months, there were evidence of polio viruses in the environment.

Dr Usman, who represented the executive director of NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib said though the country was close to eradicating polio and that all hands must be on deck to achieve a polio free generation.

“In 2012 hundred cases of polio were reported across Nigeria, the last was seen in 2016.

“We have come a long way, 25 months without a case of wild polio type. We are close but we are not there yet, we are still seeing polio viruses in the environment,” he said.

The vice chairman, Nigeria National Polioplus Committee, Dr Kazeem Mustapha, said it was not yet uhuru for the fight against polio in Nigeria.

Dr Kazeem said the advocacy was to ensure that the tempo was maintained by getting every child immunised against polio and other diseases.

He added that different campaign platforms were engaged by Rotary International to create awareness and increase sensitivity in individuals, organisations and encourage stakeholders not to be complacent.

The Managing Director, United Healthcare Ltd., Dr Kolawole Owaka, called on Nigerians to imbibe healthy lifestyles to ensure a healthy living.

He said healthy living should not stop with good food but exercises.

Owaka recommended that there should be gymnasium centres in all the local governments where people could go to and partake in aerobic exercise to remove waste products from the body.

He added that the united healthcare, which promotes good health, does not believe in curative but rather steps to prevent diseases and other ailments.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that World polio day will be celebrated on Oct. 24.

A Reproductive Physiologist, Prof. Okanlawon Onagbesin, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to introduce Sex Education in schools as a course of its own in order to give thorough sex education to the young ones.

Onagbesin of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB), stated this at the luncheon of a book with the tittle: “I’m A Lady Now” held in Abeokuta on Saturday.

He stated that sex education should be taken seriously, especially in schools, saying in one way or the other, it would assist a child in making the right choice of a future partner.

The don stated that there should be a subject called ‘sex education’ apart from the usual conventional subjects like Biology, Physics, Chemistry and other courses.

“Sex education is very essential, not only in Nigeria but all over the world.

“When programme like this comes up, the health sector should pick it up and help to disseminate the information to schools.

“I am not sure if the level of sex education is high before now, but this is the time to really instill it in schools so that teachers, possibly psychologist, can help to introduce this kind of course.

“Introduction of sexual education will enable and equip a child from a young age, before growing into young adult, to make an informed choice in the selection of a right partner,” he said.

He said the book being lunched would be of great help to the younger generation because the state at which the country was in, teenagers don’t know anything about sex.

In his keynote address, the Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Mr. Obafemi Omokungbe, said he accepted the address without hesitation, saying he shared same opinion with the writer.

Omokungbe observed that majority of students often mismanaged situation when faced with challenges of life due to lack of adequate information.

He added that lack of information resulted sometimes to irreversible situation in life, poor performance in academic work, poor choice of friends and even life partners.

He urged parents, teachers and guardians to ensure that they give their children or wards appropriate information at every stage to ensure a well-balanced adulthood.

In her address of welcome, the author of the book, Dr. Opeyemi Adeyemi, a medical practitioner, said she was triggered to write the book because she realised that most ladies do not know much about their reproductive health

Adeyemi, a public health specialist, stated that the book centred on reproductive health of women.

“I was doing my NYSC and then I realised that most young ladies don’t know anything about their menstruation health, some of them don’t know their menstrual cycle, some of them didn’t know what is molestation.

“I believe a book like this would not just empower teenage girls on their journey to womanhood but also improve their reproductive health as a whole,” she said.
