The Electoral Commission has approved election deposits for the 2019 National and Provincial Elections of R200 000 for parties wishing to contest national elections and R45 000 per provincial election contested.

The IEC said the amounts are the same as those used in the 2014 national and provincial elections, meaning it is a significant reduction in the amount in real terms.

“The final determination of the deposits by the commission followed the publication of the proposed amounts for public comment in October 2018. A total of 14 submissions were received from political parties and other stakeholders. The submissions ranged between calls for an increase in the deposit amounts, retaining the proposed amounts, and a decrease or the scrapping of deposits,” the IEC said.

In making a determination of the final deposit amounts, the commission said it has considered all the submissions along with local and international practice.

“The practice of prescribing election deposits has been part of our electoral democratic reality in South Africa since 1994. In setting the amount, the commission sought to strike a judicious balance between an amount so high that it unfairly impairs the ability of potential electoral contestants and an amount so low that it fails to dissuade frivolous parties and results in a long, unwieldy and cluttered ballot paper,” IEC explained.

In 2004, the amounts set were R150 000 for national elections and R30 000 for provincial elections. This was increased to R180 000 and R34 000 in 2009 and raised again to R200 000 and R45 000 in 2014.

Steady increase in parties contesting elections

Despite the increases in the amount of deposits, the IEC noted that the number of parties contesting national and provincial elections has steadily risen over the past 20 years, while the number of parties that have won seats in the National Assembly has remained relatively constant.

The commission warned that parties which fail to secure a seat in the National Assembly or provincial legislature forfeit their deposit to the National Revenue Fund.

“The number of votes required to secure a seat in both the national and provincial legislatures depends on the turnout of the elections. In 2014, parties required 45 892 votes to be guaranteed a seat in the National Assembly and between 13 627 votes (Northern Cape) and 59 219 votes (Gauteng) for a provincial seat,” the IEC said.

There are currently 285 political parties registered for national elections with the Electoral Commission and a further 36 applications are currently under consideration.

In order to contest the elections, political parties must:

  • Be registered with the Electoral Commission;
  • Submit a list of candidates within the specified period on the election timetable and
  • Pay the relevant deposit within the specified period on the election timetable.

While there is no deadline for party registration for participation in an election (as with voter registration it is continuous), the IEC warned that political parties which have not yet submitted a registration application to the Electoral Commission are unlikely to meet all the requirements for registration in time to contest this year’s elections.

Some supporters of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi state clashed on Saturday, leaving one person seriously wounded and a car destroyed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent who witnessed the incident reports that the fight occurred at Bauchi Club roundabout along Ahmadu Bello when the PRP was preparing to flag-off it’s gubernatorial campaign in the state.

An eyewitness, Mr Yusuf Yaro, told NAN that trouble started when one of the vehicles of a PRP supporter broke down in front of APC supporters office at the popular roundabout, due to mechanical problem.

“Today is the flagging off of PRP campaign exercise. The  PRP supporters were conducting their rally and moving from Zaranda Hotel to Kobi street and to other selected areas chosen for the occasion.

“Unfortunately, a vehicle belonging to a PRP supporter broke down in front of an APC campaign office at the Bauchi Club roundabout, thus resulting in the clash,” Yaro said.

Another eyewitness who identified himself as Ibrahim Sani, said the faulty  car was parked in front of the APC supporters office, with loud campaign music coming out from it.

“Honestly, I don’t know whether the vehicle was faulty, but it was parked in front of this APC supporters office.

“There was loud music coming out of it and from other PRP supporters conducting their rally.

“Maybe the APC supporters believed the action was deliberate and aimed at to mocking them, hence the clash that occurred,” he explained

NAN reports that the vehicle destroyed was Honda Accord with registration number DR-892-ABJ and the person injured, a PRP supporter, was simply identified as Abdullahi, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kamal  Abubakar , told NAN that the command was yet to receive formal report on the incident.

NAN reports that as count-down to the Election Day commences, clashes among party supporters in the state, mostly youth, have become frequent.

Most of the clashes were over the positioning of campaign posters and billboards within the metropolis.

Popular American multiple  Grammy Award Winner, Robert Sylvester Kelly also known as R. Kelly has been dropped by his Record Label, Sony Music.

According to reports, the artiste who is currently facing series of allegation of abduction, sexual abuse and exploitation was dropped by the record label on Friday, Jan.18.

The `I believe I can Fly’ crooner was also removed from the RCA website whose parent company is Sony Music.

Sony’s move comes after years of public calls, and even a petition from members of the #MuteRKelly Movement, for the company to part ways with him.

Those calls intensified in the wake of the documentary `Surviving R. Kelly’ in which multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct.

The protest were by women, organisations and victims including parents and relations of victims at the Sony Music offices in Los Angeles and its New York Headquarters.

Reports had it that Lady Gaga and Celine Dion who had worked with him (Gaga’s `What do you want’ and Dion’s `I am your Angel’) had apologised and promised to remove the songs from streaming platforms.

Similarly, Chance the Rapper  also pulled out his 2015 collaboration with R. Kelly `Somewhere in Paradise’ from all streaming services.

Surviving R.Kelly is a six hour-long chapter documentary that dives into the terrible, tangled history of allegations against the 52 year-old  super star and separated father of three.

The first two episodes dug into the childhood of the Chicago born rapper turned producer, singer and song writer, in which he was recognised as a musical prodigy.

His unstoppable rise to stardom and his relationship to Aaliyah (now late), whom he met when she was 12 years-old were also in the first two episodes of the documentary.

The third and fourth episodes detailed the circumstances of the so-called “pee tape,” which allegedly showed Kelly having sex with and urinating on a 14 year-old girl, and the alledged child pornography case that ended in a surprise acquittal.

The final two episodes highlighted the reports from the last several years that Kelly alledgedly isolated and groomed women and girls into a sex cult for his own pleasure.

All of these incidents had been exhaustively reported and dissected in public. Women had come forward with eyewitness accounts of gaslighting, intimidation, molestation and violence.

There is so much smolder surrounding Kelly who recently released  a song, “Born to My Music,’’ his first for  the year 2019.

Senior Manager, Innovations and Development Department, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Mr. Muhammad Jiya, has emphasised the need for small business owners to move from offline to online operations, using digital skills.

Jiya said this on Saturday in Abuja at the Business to Business (B2B) Nigeria 4th National Dialogue with the theme: “Digitilising Nigeria’s Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Space for Profitability.”

He said digitisation was transforming everything, from markets and whole societies to the environment and individuals.

He added that “it is a paradigm where computing resources are available when needed, and you pay for their use the same way as for household utilities.”

According to him, business in Nigeria is still experiencing slow growth due to manual ways of operation that is devoid of digital and advanced processes.

“It is high time, therefore, we move from offline to online which may be disruptive to some SMEs, but it paves the way for SMEs to create their own destiny,” he said.

The NIGCOMSAT official listed some free online services which SMEs could use to move their businesses to the digital world to include Microsoft, Google, Apache Desktop Openoffice.

He also listed NIGCOMSAT services that could be useful to SMEs to include  Transponder Leasing, Broadband  Services, Broadcasting/Direct to Home, Navigation Services, Telemedince/E-Health,

Others are E-Commerce and E-Government solutions, Urban and Regional Planningsolutions and Software and Hardware Solutions.

He urged SMEs to talk to their peers in other small businesses or collaborate with someone who could transfer and share with him/her both the particular technology and the digital skills needed for digitisation.

“SMEs should establish a culture of innovation: Digitization is becoming increasingly important in the search for more efficient solutions and constant improvement.

“SMEs interested in digitisation should exploit collaboration with IT specialised SMEs in their community, build strong network of business partners to exchange skills and resources.”

Suggesting ways government could stimulate digitisation of SMEs, he said agencies like Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) should organise regular workshops on ComputerAppreciation and Digitisation processes.

He also suggested that government should do more to make electricity and other infrastructure needed for digitisation of SMEs available and affordable.

He said “I want government to make loan facilities available to entrepreneurs/would-be entrepreneurs (SMEs Operators).

“In addition, government should approve two additional Communications Satellite for NIGCOMSAT for Nigerian SMEs to enjoy affordable and High Speed Broadband Internet Connectivity, irrespective of their locations in the country.”

Nigeria 2019: Atiku Replies Government Corruption Allegations

The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has described as a “cock and bull story” the allegation on Friday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed that he has a case to answer over the collapse of Platinum Habib Bank, Bank PHB.

He also condemned the bid by the Federal Government to get the United States government to deny him visa, saying with or without a trip to the US, the PDP would dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC) at next month’s election.

In a statement issued in Abuja  Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the federal government should bury its head in shame having failed to stop him from travelling to the US.

He said it was shameful that the governing APC took it upon itself to call on the authorities of another country not to grant a private citizen entry visa, which ordinarily should not be its business.

Lai Mohammed had at the hint of the US granting Atiku visa last year, cautioned the Americans not to contemplate the gesture as it might give the impression that the foreign power is supportive of the opposition party’s candidate.

But Atiku who arrived in the US on Thursday said the APC was jittery knowing that its government has failed, stressing that Buhari’s days as president of Nigeria were numbered, which explains why members of the ruling party have been running from pillar to post.

He challenged the federal government to either prove his alleged corrupt activities, or forever remain quiet.

“It is disgusting to continue to spin allegations of corruption against me by people who have failed to come forward with a single shred of evidence of my misconduct while in office.

Isn’t it a shame that the ruling party whose National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole only yesterday gave official confirmation to the general belief that, even if Lawrence Anini becomes an APC member today, Buhari will forgive and consecrate him can turn around to accuse me of corruption today? They just suddenly woke up to the reality that their lies about Atiku being corrupt can no longer hold?

“I challenge the federal government to come up with evidence that I benefited from N156 million slush funds through Claremont Management Services Account on 13th January, 2009 as well as the collapse of Bank PHB as they have alleged.

“It is instructive to note that the same BankPHB is now Keystone bank which was said to have been acquired by Buhari’s cronies through AMCON last year,” Atiku said.

“Tell them that their days of deceit are numbered.

Nigerians are tired of them and they can no longer lie or take the people for a ride anymore,” the statement said

Nigeria: Atiku Ends Visit To US, Says APC A Failure

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) said during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in the U.S that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has been a “failure” for the past 4 years.

Atiku slammed the party for its many failures in all sectors, at the event organised by the PDP-USA inside the Trump hotel in Washington, DC.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari has not kept the promises he made on the campaign trail.

Atiku added that he doesn’t think Buhari is “capable” of fulfilling those promises.

“I don’t think he’s capable of sustained focus,” Atiku said. “I don’t think he understands the system.

Many of these promises were feasible if Buhari actually wanted to follow through on them. Instead, the only promises he has kept are the ones that put money in the pockets of his relatives and his cronies, he said.

Atiku said president Buhari has “failed miserably” and the APC -led government at the Centre is putting up fake figures to cover up its mess on the economy.

Meanwhile, Atiku and his delegation has checked out of their Trump Tower hotel in Washington, en route Nigeria, ending his brief visit to Washington.
