A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South region of the country, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has decried alleged campaign of calumny mounted against the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, by the duo of the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, and the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe.

Eze, in a statement issued, signed and circulated in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, also charged the people of the State, especially those from the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, not to give in to the daily harassment against their conscience and hearing by the duo of Governor Wike and Senator Abe, in an attempt to use contrived negative ethnic persuasion against the Minister who served as the immediate past Governor of the State, but should be objective enough to see through the duo’s manipulation and remember Amaechi’s love for them in all he has brought to the State and the District.

Eze’s statement came against the backdrop of recent consistent media attacks on the Minister by Governor Wike and Senator Abe, especially in regards to the recent decision of the Federal Government to dissolve the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the action which saw to be removal of all Board members, including the former Executive Director (Finance), of the board, Mr Derek Mene.

It would be recalled that Senator Abe had consistently accused the minister for the removal of Mene by the Federal Government, especially as his counterpart in the dissolved board, the former substantive Executive Director (Projects), Engr. Samuel Adjogbe, was reassigned to be a member of the temporary management team as Acting Executive Director.

But Eze, reacting to recent misrepresentations in the media by the duo of Governor Wike and Senator Abe, said the character casting against the Honourable Minister of Transportation had fallen flat in the face of facts and objectivity, noting that sincere people and indeed the people of Ogoni and the entire Rivers South-East Senatorial District know better that Amaechi had shown much more interest and love in their affairs than any politician, even among those from the region, had ever done in history.

According to Eze, Abe had once confessed that he is “the highest political investment of Amaechi” and affirming the Senator’s statement, Eze said “truly he is, if one considers that Abe, who came into Rivers State House of Assembly in 1999 on a political party platform unpopular in Rivers state politics, until Amaechi influenced his appointment as the Commissioner of Information under Dr Peter Odili’s  a PDP-led administration. After this,  Amaechi appointed him the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, after which Amaechi influenced his election as the Senator representing the South-East Senatorial District of the State. Amaechi stood by him to get him reelected while Governor Wike did his best to frustrate his reelection bid.

“Amaechi in further demonstration for his love for this new face of Judas Iscariot asked him to suggest any of his supporters to be appointed into NDDC to the detriment of other well qualified APC members who have suffered and laboured much for the party. Abe submitted the name of Mr. Derek Mene and was subsequently appointed as the Executive Director, Finance and Administration (EDFA).which sadly Senator Abe and his group have been using to deny every form of assistance to every other APC members who doesn’t belong to his group.

“In the case of Governor Wike, it is a known fact that Amaechi, during his tenure as the Governor of Rivers State, appointed him as his Chief of Staff and left in his hands all the political issues of his administration, thereafter he nominated him as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It is baffling therefore that Amaechi could become a target of destruction and humiliation in the hands of the duo of Wike and Abe, whom Amaechi had invested so much in to make them whatever they have become politically in Nigeria.

“The duo, in their attempt to desecrate and decimate his political clout, and incite the Ogoni against him, whose love for the Ogoni and the South-Eastern senatorial district is infectious. Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike’s statement captured it more aptly when he stated, ‘I decried the political wickedness being meted out to Ogoni people by the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’.

“What sin has Amaechi committed against the Ogoni or any section of Rivers state? It is only because he pleaded with his good friend Abe to join him and other APC stakeholders to rebuild the party on the mission to rescue the State”, he explained.

Eze further recalled that Amaechi, while Governor of Rivers State, did his best to circulate both developments and appointments to all sectors of the state without any basis of biasness, lamenting that today those who had benefitted immensely from the Minister’s large heartedness are doing everything within their powers to destroy Amaechi, saying “but God will not permit it.

“The Eastern Senatorial District of Rivers state can’t and will not complain that Amaechi was or has been unjust to the zone in view of the fact of the immense, healthcare, educational, agricultural and other facilities that were set up during the administration of Amaechi in the state. Many major and minor roads were attended to while all the Secretaries to the State Government (Abe and Dr George Feyi) were all appointed from the zone; including the Commissioners for Works (Dr Petetside and Chief Giadom) plus other key commissioners and appointments were zoned to the district.

The Deputy National Secretaries of APC were all elected from the zone (Dr Ngofa and Chief Giadom) courtesy of Amaechi

“The above mentioned appointments were zoned to Ogoni and the Senatorial District, apart from the office of the EDFA of the NDDC, which Abe used to play ethnic politics, frustrating any form of development in  Opobo/Nkoro, Oyibo, and Andoni local government areas, all parts of Rivers South-East talkless of other local government areas of the state by NDDC and principally using it to sponsor unwarranted attacks on the person and personality of Amaechi and key leaders of APC in the state”, he pointed out.

Furthermore, Eze said “not minding limited  opportunities, Amaechi was still able to attract the following appointments to Rivers South-East: Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside (PhD.) as NIMASA’s D.G; Ambassador Orji Ngofa as Ambassador to Netherland; Joe Poroma as Federal Civil Service Commissioner; Joy Nunieh and others, are all  from Rivers South-East senatorial district.

“By May 29, 2019 an Ogoni great son will be sworn as the Deputy Governor of Rivers state in the person of Chief Victor Giadom, so under what premises are Wike and Abe inciting this peaceful ethnic nationality to raise arms against a man whose love for them is infectious if not to demonstrating their wickedness against a man whose inputs in their political lives can’t be overemphasised”, he queried.

He, however, put the duo on notice that Rivers State, particularly the Ogoni, are too sophisticated  and enlightened than to be swayed by cheap propaganda, all aimed at pulling Chibuike Rotimi down.

Eze counselled the duo that no matter their devious efforts against a man who made them politically they will never become Amaechi.

FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello

By Peter Usman:

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA is set to partner with the Nigerian University of Technology and Management Project group to build a world class university of technology and management in the FCT.

Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Bello, who spoke while receiving executives of the group led by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, in Abuja, said the project is in furtherance of the plan of the FCT Administration to have specialized institutions in parts of the territory.

Bello, while noting that Abuja has matured in terms of population and infrastructure, said the FCT Administration will give the group all the support to ensure that the project is commenced as quickly as possible.

He said arrangements are being made in the interim, to situate the project within the premises of the Abuja University of Technology, Abaji or the Abuja technology village.

According to the Minister, “We are now developing a new area of the city which is called phase 5 in the southern axis of the city and within phase 5, we are earmarking an area that could basically accommodate what you did in Hyderabad.”

“It’s not just going to be yours alone, but other institutions that have similar ideas and we are doing so because we have a major arterial road network that is going to connect phase 3, 4 and phase 5 and part of it is under construction already.

“We are now concentrating on so many other things, the industrial zone, medical and even school facilities. Now even within the educational system, we are now targeting more of specialized institutions because by the natural phase of growth, the city has reached a point where it requires that”.

Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, said Nigeria is very privileged to have a group of investors who have gone through the system, having been trained by such universities and have contributed and given back to their own societies by building such institutions.

He said they are now going beyond the call of duty to help Nigeria in building such a university.

South Africa To Employers: Comply With New Minimum Wage or Be Shamed

1

South African government has said that names of employers who fail to comply with the National Minimum Wage (NMW) Act will be published on the Department of Labour’s website.

“Shaming such employers will ensure they are recognized as people intent on defying the state. This will go on to ensure that they will not be able to do business with government,” the Department’s Chief for Statutory Services Fikiswa Mncanca said on Wednesday.

Mncanca was speaking to inspectors in East London on the department’s readiness to implement and enforce the NMW, which was recently signed into law.

The purpose of the NMW is to advance economic development and social justice by improving the wages of the lowest paid workers, protecting workers from unreasonable low wages, preserving the value of the NMW, promoting collective bargaining and supporting economic policy.

The Act, which came into effect on 01 January 2019, stipulates that R20 is the minimum rate workers should earn per hour. For farm and forestry worker is R18.00 per hour, domestic workers R15.00 per hour and for Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) is R11.00 per hour.

These fees will be reviewed annually by the National Minimum Wage Commission appointed by the Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant this week.

On Tuesday, the department announced that they will undertake a national blitz to assess levels of NMW Act, at businesses – with special focus on the wholesale and retail sectors as they have been identified as some of the problematic sectors.

About 1 392 inspectors have been assigned to monitor compliance.

South African Assembly Cuts National Budget By 47% To Cutting Costs

0

Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete says the budget for next week’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) has been cut by 47% as Parliament remains committed to cutting costs.

Mbete said this when the Presiding Officers of Parliament briefed the media at the National Assembly on the state of readiness ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address next week.

“Consistent without endeavour to continuously scale down on costs in light of prevailing economic conditions, we have kept arrangements to the bare minimum without compromising the significance and decorum of the occasion.

“As South Africans continue to face economic challenges, Parliament is taking very feasible steps to do more with fewer resources progressively. Parliament has cut the budget for the SONA ceremony by 47% in comparison with the 2018 SONA budget,” she said.

Mbete said a couple of events and items that usually form part of SONA have been withdrawn from the 2019 February SONA. This includes the participation of the nine eminent persons, provincial winners of education radio programme, the Junior and Civil Guard of Honour selected from the different legislatures.

She also said that as has been the case over the years, the post SONA gala dinner for Members of Parliament and guests will not take place next week.

From the budgeted R4.7 million in 2018, the actual expenditure went down to R1.9 million. For this year’s SONA, Mbete said, Parliament has budgeted R2.5 million.

She said Parliament was confident that with further spending control measures that have been put in place, the actual expenditure will be significantly lower.

She said a ceremonial parade exhibiting military traditions, drills and ethos of the army, the navy and the air force of the republic of South Africa will be maintained.

“This includes a national salute by the Ceremonial Guard of the South African National Defence Force, a military band, a salute flight by the SA Air Force and the 21 gun salute,” she said.

Mbete said, meanwhile, that former Heads of State, President Thabo Mbeki and President Kgalema Motlanthe, and former Presiding Officers, former National Assembly Speaker Dr Frene Ginwala and former National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu, have confirmed that they will attend the event.

She said there has been a high interest in the event from the media, and that 800 applications for accreditation have been received from national, provincial, community and international media organisations.

“We are pleased to state that all arrangements are in place to ensure a successful hosting of this important and last State of the Nation Address for the Fifth Parliament,” she said.

South Africa Mourns With Brazil Over Dam Disaster

President Cyril Ramaphosa has conveyed condolences to the people of Brazil following the collapse of a mining dam in south-eastern Minas Gerais.

Over 60 people died and hundreds remain missing after a tailings dam, owned by mining giant Vale, collapsed on Friday afternoon.

“As the people of South Africa, we join the people of Brazil in mourning the loss of their loved ones. Our prayers are with you and we hope those yet to be found will be recovered as soon as possible,” said President Ramaphosa on Monday.

Rescuers have been trying to recover bodies and search for survivors, but three days after the humanitarian and environmental tragedy, the chances of finding people alive are remote.

The over half of the missing people are employees of Vale, which owns the iron ore mine. Some residents of the area are also unaccounted for.

A large number of employees were having lunch in a company cafeteria located just below the dam when it burst and unleashed a flow of toxic mud.

Rescuers believe the flow of mud swept the cafeteria and a local hotel away, making them difficult to be located.

The Brazilian government has promised a full investigation into the matter. President Jair Bolsonaro and Minas Gerais state Governor Romeu Zema flew over the destroyed region and promised manpower to aid the rescue, and resources to help the region recover.

South Africa registers Additional .7 million Voters For 2019 Elections

0

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says 700 000 new voters have been added to the voters’ roll ahead of this year’s National and Provincial elections.

IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo said this when the electoral commission briefed the media on the outcomes of the final voter registration weekend at the Imbizo Media Centre in Cape Town on Tuesday.

“The Electoral Commission is pleased to report that over 700 000 new voters registered during the final registration weekend, bringing the total number of registered voters on the voters’ roll to 26 727 921.

“Most encouragingly, of the 703 794 new registrations, over 81% [574 899] are under 30 years old. This means that the youth have heeded the call to register,” he said.

The announcement comes after some government departments and political parties, among others, put in a last ditch effort over the weekend to urge citizens to come out in their numbers to either register to vote or to check their details at their nearest voting stations.

The Department of Home Affairs extended the working hours at its offices to ensure that people who have not collected their identity documents or those wanting to apply for temporary identity documents are able to do so.

Mamabolo said when registration figures are combined with new registrations during the March 2018 registration weekend, about 1.1 million new voters have been added to the voters’ roll ahead of the upcoming elections.

“Of these new voters, 52% are women and 48% are men. Nearly half

South Africa At UN, Calls For Climate Change Efforts Be Scaled Up

0

South Africa believes that efforts in the fight against climate change need to be scaled up within a multilateral regime that protects the development gains of developing countries.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate on addressing the impact of climate related disasters on international peace and security, South Africa’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Jerry Matjila, said the country has with great concern noted the erratic nature and veracity of natural calamities.

These erratic weather patterns including hurricanes, tsunamis and devastating wildfires among others had affected countries in the Caribbean and Africa, Australia as well as the United States of America (USA), among others.

“It is clear to us that climate change is a global sustainable development challenge that can only realistically be addressed if we do so collectively, and through a rules-based multilateral regime that is based on science, equity as well as differentiation of action and support between countries with very different national circumstances.

“Climate action needs to be dramatically scaled up, while protecting and furthering the development gains of developing countries and eradicating poverty,” he said at the debate on Friday.

He said these catastrophes destroyed the livelihoods of millions of people around the globe while also displacing hundreds more.

The African continent, in addition is particularly vulnerable to climate change, as the single greatest threat to its development and prosperity.

South Africa has in recent years experienced some of the worst drought patterns it has seen in decades.

“Africa therefore stands in full solidarity with other regions similarly affected by natural disasters, such as those highlighted in the concept note prepared by the Dominican Republic. We remain firmly committed to addressing climate change and responding to natural disasters at a national, regional and international level,” said the ambassador.

The Dominican Republic alongside South Africa, is one of the five countries that joined the UNSC to serve for a two year period that got underway in January.

The Ambassador said the UNSC already has strong foundations for this multilateral solution already in the form of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, reinforced by regional development programmes, such as the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“We look to the UNFCCC [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change] its Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement for policy direction and leadership on climate change and also refer to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction,” he said.
