Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Co-convener of the National Peace Committee, has criticised Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi concerning the prevailing violence in the state ahead of the November 11 governorship election.

Kukah expressed disappointment in Bello’s leadership during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, stating that the governor, known for being the youngest in the country, has fallen short of expectations.

Kukah who is the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Archdiocese, remarked, “I feel very sad because Kogi has been on the front burner, and Yahaya Bello, the governor, prided himself with being the youngest governor and being a representation of what the youths of this country can do if they are given the opportunity.”

Kukah indicated that Bello’s performance has not showcased the potential of young leaders.

He further commented, “Sadly, I think he’s been a very poor advertisement for what young people can do”.

Governor Yahaya Bello assumed the governorship of Kogi State in 2015 following the demise of Abubakar Audu, who had won the governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress but passed away before being inaugurated. Bello secured a second term in November 2019.

The criticisms against Governor Bello come in the wake of the upcoming governorship elections on November 11, not just in Kogi but also in Imo and Bayelsa states.
