The Federal Fire Service Kaduna Command, has issued a strong warning to residents in anticipation of Harmattan- related fire emergencies.
It says as the first responders to such emergencies, the Federal Fire Service is taking proactive measures to prevent predictable disasters, especially Harmattan-related fires, hence the early warning systems and actions to avert humanitarian crises, particularly in vulnerable and remote areas.
While reiterating its commitment to maintain a state of readiness and swift responses during emergencies, the Fire Service urges host communities to actively engage in risk management by sharing timely information with relevant stakeholders and collaborating with the Service to raise public awareness and enhance risk mitigation.
An official statement by the Service advised the public to heed early warnings about Harmattan-related fire emergencies.
It warned that the combination of dropping temperatures, strong winds, and increased use of heating sources during this season would significantly increase the risk of fires and related emergencies.
The Command assures the public of its readiness to respond effectively to fire outbreaks and other emergencies.
In recent years, Nigeria has seen a surge in climate-related crises, including droughts, floods, and fire outbreaks, particularly during the Ember Months and the onset of the Harmattan Season.
These incidents, according to the statement, have grown in intensity as climate extremes become more frequent and severe.
