Nigeria: Fire Destroys 80 Shops In Kano Market

An early morning inferno on Wednesday destroyed six permanent and 74 temporary shops at Kurmi Market in Kano., Northwest Nigeria

Spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, in a statement said, the Agency received an emergency call at about 5:23 am from one Aliyu A Alkasim who reported the incident.

He said, immediately after receiving the report, the service mobilized it’s men to the scene and successfully put out the fire with no casualties recorded.

“Today being Wednesday 1st March 2023, Our control room received an emergency call at about 05:23 am from one Aliyu A. Alkasim, he reported an out break of fire at Kurmi Market Kano Municipal Area.

Saminu said, the cause of the incident is still under investigation and no life was lost and no one injured.

He however advised the general public especially traders, to switch off and disconnect all electrical appliances when not in use as well as avoid careless use of naked wire within the market premises.

At Kurmi Market, traders mostly sell local handicrafts such as rafia mat, shoes, beads, local textiles, as well as food stuffs.
