In commemoration of the Day of the African Child, YMCA Liberia under its Civil Peace Service has launched a campaign to advocate through the Liberian National legislature to pass a bill against Child Trafficking in Liberia.
The program which brought together students, youth leaders and member of the National Legislature was held under the theme “Eliminating Harmful Practices affecting Children” at the YMCA Gymnasium in Monrovia on Thursday.
Delivering the petition to the National Legislature, the Youth Representative to the Board of Montserrado County YMCA Council, Musu Senwah urged the lawmakers to speedily and unconditionally review all laws on child trafficking and to be passed with immediate effect.
She added that the lawmakers should ensure that harmful labor practices against children in Liberia be abolished immediately and called on President George Weah to muster the efforts of the government of Liberia in order to uncompromised child labor issues in the country.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the national legislature, District #7 Montserrado County Representative Solomon George lauded the YMCA Liberia through its Civil Peace Service for such an event and promised that the national legislature will strive to implement the plights of the young people.
He also urged parents who are involved in sending kids on the streets to sell during school going hours and other abuses against the rights of children to desist from such action as it has the propensity to hamper their children’s future.
