Inspector-General of Nigeria Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has reiterated the commitment of the police to ensure swift justice in the case of the famous Nigerian gospel musician, Osinachi Nwachukwu.
Osinachi was allegedly murdered by her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, on 8th April, 2022.
Baba gave the assurance on Wednesday when he received the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Kedem Tallen, accompanied by members of the deceased family, who paid him a visit to ensure justice is dispensed.
According to him, investigation is ongoing and the suspect currently in detention at the FCT Abuja Police Command.
“As information from sources close to the family and independent witnesses fingered her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, as being responsible for her death. The FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force, in whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, arrested the deceased’s husband at about 5pm on Sunday 10th April, 2022 at their residence” he said.
The IGP said the command has approached the National Hospital, Abuja, for post-mortem examinations on the deceased to ascertain the cause of death, noting that the husband will be charged to court as soon as evidence is established.
“Cases of this nature including domestic violence, sexual and gender-based violence, rape, and other social vices are accorded utmost attention with a view to bringing their perpetrators to justice according to the provisions of extant laws” he added.
Earlier, the Minister had urged the police to pay heed to the plight of women in Nigeria, particularly in relation to Sexual and Gender-based violence.
