Liberian President under attacks for playing basketball under increasing COVID-19 Cases

Date:

Wide criticisms are trailing Liberian President, George Weah from citizens for  playing basketball and volleyball in the wake of increasing cases of Coronavirus in the country.

The Liberian leader was seen on Wednesday June 23, 2021 at the nation’s biggest sporting ground “Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex Gymnasium” in Paynesville City playing volleyball and basketball in the ongoing 2021 edition of the Intra-Governmental tournament,
which attracted a huge crowd to grace the matches amidst the growing cases of Covid-19 in the country.

Although, he is the Chief Patron of sports in Liberia, President George Weah captained the Ministry of State to the grand final of the Volleyball and Basketball components of the competition.

However, several citizens including opposition politicians frowned at his action amidst the current situation of Covid-19 in the country.

The aggrieved citizens have termed the president’s action as a total disregard to the fight against Covid-19.

It can be recalled that on Tuesday June 22, 2021 President George M. Weah dismissed his Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs Eugene L. Fahngon for what he termed as a result of spreading false information regarding the government’s response to Covid-19 when the former minister said he was cautioning the government on the manner in which they were handling the pandemic at this moment that raised the public concern.

But the former Deputy Minister in a facebook post on Thursday June 24, 2021 disclosed that he would  respond to his dismissal on Friday June 25, 2021.
.

Meanwhile, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) latest report on June 22, 2021 revealed 119 new cases making the total confirmed cases at 3265, 4 new deaths making the total number of 110  deaths and 43 new recoveries making the total number of 2222 recoveries with an increasing number of deaths from other illnesses like; typhoid, malaria, common cold among other.
