Revered by admirers as an embodiment of resilience and strong work ethic and derided by detractors as shady, fallen Kenyan billionaire Chris Kirubi has left behind a vast Business Empire ranging from media to Real Estate.
Affectionately referred to as DJ CK, for his famous role as a DJ in his own radio station, the prestigious Capital FM, Kirubi died on Monday 14th June, 2021 at 1PM aged 80. He had been battling cancer.
Prior to his death, he had posted a motivational message on Facebook and Twitter, which has been interpreted as a premonition of his death.
“Top of the morning to you, my friend. It doesn’t have to be a tiring Monday. Instead, I bring to you good tidings of favour, success, achievements and happiness in the new week. Give yourself a go towards your success plan. Enjoy today and the rest of the week. #AskKirubi”
His businesses include Centum Investment, Haco, Capital Media Group, Nairobi Bottlers, Bayer East Africa and International House.
Despite his wealth, critics always accused him of being a beneficiary of crony capitalism. Notably, he came under fire for allegedly having a hand in the collapse of the multibillion state-owned retailer, Uchumi Supermarket.
He was among a coterie of influential business men christened, the Deep State, believed to have a final decision on who becomes the president of Kenya.
