A Nigerian Environmental Organisation, Bridge That Gap, has tasked Kaduna State House of Assembly on promulgating laws that will protect the environment.

Addressing members of the Assembly during an advocacy visit, Executive Director of Bridge That Gap, Gloria Bulus, said such laws were necessary to forestall further damage already caused to the environment.

The Executive Director, who noted the consequences of such negative actions, also called for the adoption of sustainable measures to mitigate effects of climate change in the northern Nigerian state.

Miss Bulus said the situation in Nigeria remained pathetic because the environment was faced with several issues including drought, dissipating water level and soil degradation, among others, calling on critical stakeholders to put hands on deck to salvage the situation.

She said, Bridge That Gap, is seeking partnership with executive arm of Government in several areas, including development of environmental policy, to address some of the issues peculiar to Kaduna State.

Responding, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Nuhu Shadalafiya, assured the team, the willingness of the Assembly to work with them in mitigating effect of climate change, as well as provision of laws that will govern environmental affairs.

According to him, the Assembly had recently passed a Law on the conservation, management and effective use of forests, saying the Bill is before the State Governor awaiting his assent.

Shadalafiya also asked the team on development of documents on environment that will enlighten citizens on how to create safer environment.

Highlight of the advocacy visit was the presentation of a communique to the Assembly by the organisation. It was developed by participants of 2019 Earth Day Celebrations organised by Bridge That Gap.
