Armed bandits, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have again struck in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria on Monday, shooting sporadically leaving many people reportedly wounded.

About two dozen armed bandits on motorbikes, brandishing AK-47 and other weapons, recently attacked Layin-lasan village in Birnin-Gwari and unleashed terror on the inhabitants.

Spokesman of Kaduna Police Command, ASP Mukthar Aliyu confirmed the incident, but could not give the casualty figure in the attack.

“Yes the Police and the military are on top of the situation. And armed police and soldiers have been deployed in a joint operation,” he said.

An eye witness said, “three people were seriously wounded at Layin-lasan, while another person sustained multiple gun shots at the neighbouring village of Layin-Nakurmi”.

“Around 2.35pm, local vigilantes and volunteers from kuyello district succeeded in repelling the attack, forcing the bandits to flee to Hamada forest in Sabuwa local government area of Katsina State”.

A resident of the area, Mallam Shu’aibu, also confirmed the incident saying:” The Armed bandits came and surrounded their village but later disappeared. “He laments lack of presence of security personnel in the area.

Birnin-Gwari has continued to make headlines of armed banditry, Cattle rustling and Kidnapping. At the moment, villages in Eastern part of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area, such as Kirazo, Layin Mai Gwari, kwalakwangi, part of kazage districts were said to have been deserted and inhabitants fled to safe zones within Kaduna and Katsina states.
