A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 33-year-old civil servant, Aminu Maru, to one year in prison for breach of official trust.

The Magistrate, Mr Raphael Egbe, sentenced the accused to one year imprisonment with an option of N100,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to one-count charge of breach of official trust.

The accused, who resides in Janyan House, opposite Gwagwalada Park, Area 1, Abuja, committed the offence between Nov. 15 and Nov. 21, 2017.

The Prosecutor, Mr Jamil Hamisu, had told the court that Maru, an accountant seconded to National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) from Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), was arraigned by the State Security Service.

Hamisu said that the accused, an accountant seconded to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) from Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF),

According to the prosecutor, the accused released sensitive official documents of NAHCON to one Ibrahim Wala, a self-acclaimed Human Rights activist, who published the documents on Facebook.

The prosecutor said such an act was intended to discredit NAHCON, damage the commission’s public image and make its staff and management vulnerable to security risk.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 98 and is punishable under Section 99b of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the charge and pleaded for mercy. (NAN)
