A young registered nurse, midwife, and public health practitioner, Elizabeth David Ankama, has been appointed Special Assistant I on Students’ Affairs (Gombe South) to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, northeast Nigeria.
Ankama will be responsible for representing students in Gombe South, coordinating engagement programs, and supporting initiatives related to academic, social, and civic development. She previously served as National President of the National Union of Tangale Students (NUTS), where she oversaw programs that included financial support for undergraduate students, secondary-school outreach focused on technology and digital skills, youth-centered environmental advocacy, union chapter visits, conflict-resolution initiatives, and facilitation of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) form distribution.
Addressing past claims of a vote of no confidence during her NUTS tenure, Ankama stated that the allegations were not officially recognized and her leadership ended according to the union’s constitution. She said her focus now is on student engagement, inclusive representation, and collaboration with educational institutions and community stakeholders.
Her appointment reflects a growing trend across Africa, where young professionals, particularly women, are increasingly assuming leadership roles in politics, education, and public administration.
