Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) felicitates with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) for reaching the milestone of seventy years of actively promoting and protecting the interests of journalists and upholding the ethics of the profession.

A message of solidarity signed by the Executive Director, Sekyen Dadik says AMDF recognizes the importance of a strong and vibrant media sector in promoting democracy, good governance, and development in Africa. ” We believe that NUJ’s goal is essential to building a media sector that is independent, professional, and accountable.

“We therefore acknowledge the commitment, passion and struggles of Nigerian Journalists over the years. They have weathered the storm through challenges of attacks and intimidation, poor welfare and working conditions among others. These cannot be overlooked, as journalists are the frontline warriors that set and shape the agenda in the country.

“As we reflect on the journey so far, we commiserate with NUJ over its members that lost their lives in the line of duty and those that sustained injury, we pray for divine healing. We acknowledge those that have been incarcerated and intimidated for carrying out their duty. Courage under fire is a strength only a few have, journalists are indeed one of a kind.

“As the NUJ celebrates this milestone, we call on the Union to continue to build on its achievements and work towards a brighter future for journalists and the media sector in Nigeria. We encourage NUJ to educate its members on the need to uphold the ethics of the profession as they carry out their duties. With the coming of the internet a lot has changed in the information world and this makes it imperative for journalists to be of their highest performance professionally. Let the editorial and journalistic skill differentiate them.

“AMDF also observes the need for improved synergy between NUJ and security personnel. The rate of clashes and arrest can be reduced if the two parties put in more effort towards improving their relationship.

“It is also imperative for NUJ to advocate for the review of the welfare of journalists, the output of a journalist is at its best when he is comfortable and taken care of. Creating a befitting working environment, review and prompt payment of salaries and allowances as well as ensuring journalists’ protection should be prioritized.
We therefore, call on the government and relevant stakeholders to uphold the freedom of the press, ensure the protection of lives of all journalists as they carry out their constitutional mandate of informing and educating the public,” the message concluded.
