Stakeholders gathered in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasising the need to promote women’s leadership positions as catalysts for national development.
Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, Sarkin Kano, highlighted the crucial role women play in development, peace, and unity during the 2024 Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo (NNII) annual conference.
Sanusi decried the alarming rates of infant mortality, maternal mortality, out-of-school children, and drug addiction nationwide, citing Kano state’s high percentage of malnourished children.

He stressed that until women are recognised as central to development and policies were built around them, these issues would persist.

“A country that does not recognise the importance of women will never develop,” he said.
Rochas Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, urged women to take charge, saying, “Don’t look for relevance, be relevant, and the men will shift for you to rule.”
Sen. Dino Melaye emphasised the importance of inclusive leadership and value re-orientation in achieving transformation.
Mrs Josephine Anenih, Founder of Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo Foundation, stressed the need for re-orienting national values to address issues like lack of development, divisive behaviour, and insecurity.
“Empowering women is essential for sustainable development, as they play a vital role in environmental management and development.
“Women’s leadership and full participation are crucial in decision-making areas of sustainable development.²
“By promoting women’s leadership and addressing the challenges they face, Nigeria can work towards achieving sustainable development and a more equitable society,” she said.(NAN)
