Nigeria: Independent Candidacy Bill Scales Second Reading In The House Of Reps

A bill seeking to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to provide for independent candidacy has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999(Alteration) Bill 024 (HB1630 Independent Candidates),” is sponsored by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi.

Rotimi explained that the bill is aimed to expand Nigeria’s democratic space.

He stated that “this legislation, which is a legacy Bill from various Assemblies, was reintroduced for consideration following its first reading on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

“Today the Bill was recommitted to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration and legislative action.

The second reading was sequel to a motion moved by Isa Bello (APC Sokoto), Deputy chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business and seconded by Akin Rotimi.

Rotimi expressed joy for the progress so far with the Bill, emphasising the importance of expanding political participation through independent candidacy.

According to him, the legislation is pivotal for the continued evolution of democracy in the country, it recognizes the constitutional significance of offering citizens the option to run for public office independently, thereby ensuring greater inclusivity.
