An outstanding legal practitioner and leading advocate for a better third tier of government, Barr. Unubi Akoh says he has after a careful and wider consultations with youths, elders and other stakeholders of Ofu Local Government Council, decided to throw his cap into the council’s chairmanship contest to salvage the drifting council.
The enthusiastic Chairmanship aspirant who was accompanied on his entourage with large supporters disclosed this while submitting his letter of intent at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Secretariat in Lokoja, last Saturday (August 10th, 2024.
Cornered by reporters who had laid ambush for the chairmanship and Counsellorship aspirants of the party, were told that if given the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the council, and given the experience he ( the aspirant) had garnered over the years at the Legal Department of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, headquarters, Abuja, where he served as the Assistant Legal Officer, the roads network of the area, would receive a tremendous attention while erosion and flood which have continued unmitigated, affecting various communities would be a thing of the past.
He also said that the elders and youths of the LGA would be on the front burner of his administration if given the nod, saying these groups would form his administration’s potent machines needed for consultations from time to time on matters of importance.
The aspirant who commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold and courageous step in reviving the third tier of governance by the restoration of council’s autonomy in the country, said a lot would be achieved with the direct allocations to it.
As a lawyer therefore, he said, he would strive to manage the resources of the council effectively and efficiently, knowing full well the implications of its otherwise.
A concerted efforts would be dynamically taken to register a well articulated IGR while locked up shops would be built in some communities to enhance the market beautifications and to also serve as sheds to wares from harsh weather of rain and sun.
Barr. Akoh who is expected to roll out his action blue print as soon as he was through with the screening exercise, said he expected to come out with implementable blue print for the people of the LGA who he said had been itching for an administration hinged on empathetic and visionary tendencies.
Apart from Federal and State government’s resolve to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy which he said has brought untold hardship to the people, the administration under his watch, he said, would look in ward with the view to providing succour to ameliorate the sufferings.
When pressed further to give an insight into what he described as his “robust Programmes of Action” for the people of the area, the aspirant hinted that agriculture, education and health would receive his top most priority while youth development would receive an all time concern.
The aspirant, a Bachelor of law degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Barrister at Law, was certain that given a plain level ground contest, he would carry the day as according to him the youth and elders of the council are solidly behind him while a veritable organisation, which is standing up for good governance and the restoration of the dignity and identity of the lgala nation have given their nod to him to contest. He also disclosed that every community would be touched in terms of development, while saying that Ofu LGA which is reputed in Cashew production in the state, as well as its money spinning machine attraction, would be maximized to provide employment opportunities to youths and the expansion of its internal revenue generation frontiers.
