BY Joseph Edegbo

As the world marks International Women’s Day, Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has joined the global community to celebrate the achievements and relentless contributions of women in advocating for gender equality and women’s rights towards the realization of sustainable development.

A statement signed by the Executive Director of AMDF, Mrs. Sekyen Dadik to mark the event said, the Day is a reminder of the importance of creating an inclusive and equitable world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive and reach her full potential.

“This year’s theme, “Invest in women: Accelerate Progress”, highlights the significance of women’s inclusion in driving the economy and growth of any society as a matter of urgency. Investing in women is not just a matter of equality; it’s an investment in the future of our societies and economies; by accelerating progress towards gender equality and empowering women, we can unlock the full potential of half of the world’s population and drive positive change across all sectors.

“AMDF remains committed to championing gender equality and women’s empowerment as fundamental principles for building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world. Through our programs, initiatives, and partnerships, we strive to create a future where every woman and girl can live free from discrimination, violence, and injustice.

“To accelerate progress, we must prioritize investments in women’s education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and leadership development by:
• Ensuring equal access to quality education and skills training for girls and women.
• Investing in women’s health and reproductive rights, including access to family planning and maternal healthcare.
• Promoting women’s economic empowerment through entrepreneurship support, access to finance, and fair labor practices.
• Breaking down barriers to women’s leadership and political participation through mentorship programs, and policy reforms.
• Challenging harmful gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate inequality and discrimination.

“On International Women’s Day 2024, let us come together to honor the resilience and strength of women, celebrate their achievements, and renew our commitment to invest in gender equity and women’s rights worldwide.

It’s time to accelerate progress towards gender equality and unleash the full potential of women and girls globally,” it concludes.
