Nigeria is to establish recycling plants in each of the 774 local government areas nationwide. This is in line with the nation’s effort to promote a circular economy.

Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Izianq Kunle Salako, announced this in Abeokuta, southwest Nigeria, at the second edition of the Chemical Handlers and Users’ Workshop.

“The recycling plant will involve local communities as it is community-based and will involve waste management practices such as sorting of waste, composting, segregation and recycling.”

He praised the organizers, saying the workshop’s theme was in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s sustainable development mandate.

“I know that there are a lot of hindrances and problems such as lack or insufficient funds, low or poor public awareness, lack of data, poor or inadequate policies, legal and regulatory framework as well as other problems are some of the obstacles in the implementation of a circular economy,” he added.

The minister said despite challenges, President Tinubu’s administration was determined and ready to begin the full implementation of the roadmap for 2024, adding that several structures have been put in place including policies as regulatory framework aimed at addressing identified gaps.

The workshop was organized by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) with the theme “Chemicals and Waste Management: Circular Solutions for a Sustainable Economy.”
