Gen. Y. Y Kure (rtd), Shining Beacon, Welfarist Is Dead

Date:

Gen Y Y Kure as is popularly called by Nigerians, is dead. He gained prominence since his formative years in the military and Armed Forces of Nigeria .

He was born into the Royal family of Mallam and Mallama Ladi Kure on 16 April 1943 in Kurmin Musa, Kachia LGA, Kaduna State. He attended Missionary Schools in Kwoi and Kagoro for elementary education before gaining admission into Govt Secondary School Zaria popularly known as Alhuda Huda.
Young Kure enlisted into the Nigerian Army through the prestigious Nigerian Military Training College (now NDA) in 1963 and was commissioned as an officer of AFN in 1964. Since then he had an impressive career profile. Because of his high standards of self control, discipline, regimentation and Soja work he soon became a household name.

His first foray was in Protsea Australia for further Cadet Development Course 1964, Command and Staff College Jaji and numerous local and International officers training culminating in the Strategic College, NIPPS that trained the likes of Gen IBB, his bosom friend.

On Military appointments, he equally had a robust experience. He was CO 5 Infantry Bn 1966, in 1967 he was a Capt and CO 22 Infantry, in 1968 he was a Major and CO Infantry Bn. He became a Lt Col in 1974. Much later in his career, he was GOC 82 Div Enugu 1978-1983 and then GOC 2 Div Ibadan 1985-1987. From here he became a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC)in preparation for hand over to a democratic government in Nigeria. He was also appointed as Minister of Sports in between his military assignments.

He was one of the shining beacons and icons that inspired the youths to join the Military. Gen YY was soft spoken and so humble that he had to be formally introduced at formal and informal functions. He was also humane and a welfarist starting from his clan, community and country. Jaba people in particular and other tribes of Southern Kaduna generally, used to be proud of seeing their industrious son on NTA TV Stations with news on our ‘ole bro during the Gideon Orka’s coup. He concluded that assessment without much ado. Throughout his life, he acknowledged God as his consort in and out. Little wonder he took to evangelism as a give back to what our Lord has given us.

We wish him a seamless transition to eternal rest and providence for his family.

Good night Gen YY Kure sir
