Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) says it Celebrates all African Journalists, particularly heroes who lost their lives on the field, retired and those still at the frontlines as the World marks the International Day to End Impunity Against Journalists.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director Mrs. Sekyen Dadik said the Day provides the AMDF, the opportunity to highlight the critical role that journalists play in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy in societies around the world.
“It is also a time to recognize the dangers and challenges journalists face in carrying out their work.
All around the world, journalists often find themselves at the frontline; uncovering and reporting on corruption, human rights abuses, wars and several issues happening locally and globally.
“As the watchdog of society, they play a significant role in holding government, institutions, and individuals accountable for, giving voice to the voiceless and amplifying the call for justice, inclusion and development.
“Today, AMDF acknowledges the great service journalists offer at all levels; knowing that this invaluable service comes at a great cost.
“African journalists face various forms of harassment, intimidation, and violence, including threats, physical attacks, and even murder.
“The culture of impunity that allows perpetrators go unpunished only serves to perpetuate a cycle of violence and silencing of the press.
“On this day, it is crucial to reaffirm our commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring they are able to carry out their work without fear of harm or harassment. Government, international organizations, and civil societies must work together to create an environment where press freedom is prioritized and prioritized regardless of the situation.
“We owe it to ourselves to strengthen legal frameworks that protect journalists, prosecute those who commit crimes against them, and ensure justice is served.
“We must prevent, pushback and commit to a culture of justice for all media organizations and journalists.
Individually, we play a role by supporting and amplifying the voices of journalists, demanding accountability for attacks on the press, and advocating for press freedom in our own communities and beyond.
” Additionally, promoting media literacy and supporting independent journalism will in the long-term help combat misinformation and promote a more informed society.
“On this International Day to End Impunity Against Journalists, AMDF calls on all friends of democracy to stand in solidarity with journalists worldwide and work towards a future where journalism is respected, protected, and celebrated”, the statement concludes.
