A Memorandum of understanding, MOU has been signed between Jigawa State and Zindar in Niger Republic on Monitoring and Management of clashes between farmers and pastoralists along borders.
The MOU was signed by governors of the two States after a 3- day workshop organized for stakeholders on the implementation of the MOU.
Speaking shortly after signing the memorandum, Jigawa state Governor, Malam Umar Namadi said, the process began about four years ago, with the aim of finding lasting solution to the perennial Pastoralists farmers clash around boarders of the two countries.
The Governor, represented by his deputy Engr. Aminu Usman added that, the MOU would help in creating awereness among the farmers and Pastoralists on the need for peaceful coexistence, observing the rules and regulations on cross border movement.
“Under the MOU we will work together in monitoring the pastoralists movement, farm produce trade and management to enhance security and prevent elicit trade”
“We will also work to improve grazing reserves and cattles routes in both States to ensure that pastoralists have a place to graze and route without intimidation or passing through farmlands during their periodic migration,” he stressed.
On his side, the Governor of Zindar, Niger republic Malam Lawwali Amadou said, the MOU will serve as a reference and a model to African countries in monitoring and management of Pastoralists’ movement across international borders.
The MOU was signed with the support from ECOWAS and other relevant international and regional organizations.
