Zambia is to connect the Democratic Republic of Congo through a road project under a PPP system.

President Hakainde Hichilema announced this after a meeting with a delegation from GEF Africa in Lusaka.

According to the President,” afternoon we welcomed a delegation from GED Africa to discuss the Mwenda – Kasomeno Road project between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We discussed with the delegation, headed by Mr Laszlo Szijj, this PPP project that will be the shortest route connecting Zambia, from the Tanzania border at Nakonde through Luapula Province to the DRC.

“This project will include a one-stop border post at Mwenda on the Zambian side and Kasomeno on the DRC side. There will be a bridge across the Luapula River, and other support facilities like warehousing, toll plazas and feeder roads.

“We are happy to work with GED who are committed to meeting our three principles of: right cost, right quality and timely delivery.

‘Building such key infrastructure in a neglected part of Zambia will bring the much needed economic activity. “This will create jobs, business opportunities and improve the livelihoods of our people.

“Zambia is indeed an investor friendly destination” he said.
