Two prominent government ministers under the George M. Weah’s administration were chased off the University of Liberia main campus by militants of the vanguard Students Unification Party (SUP) over what they termed as “being extremely corrupt public officials”.
Finance and Development Planning Minister, Samuel Tweah and State for Presidential Affairs Minister, Nathaniel F. McGill, along with other officials of government, had gone to assess ongoing renovation works at the State run University campus when the situation occurred.
The two ministers were labeled as thieves, through slogans chanted by the group of students from SUP, asking the ministers to leave the campus.
They accused the CDC government of being responsible for the backward trend of the University.
The action by the students has created wide criticisms by stunch members of the opposition community, days after Minister of State, Nathaniel McGill revealed that President Weah will dismiss underperforming public officials ahead of the 2023 elections and urged citizens to count on the CDC regime for better leadership.
The Students Unification Party (SUP) was founded in 1970 as a student based political party and has been involved with advocacy and engaging national government to ensure that the wellbeing of students at the state run University is improved.
It could be recalled that recently the party threatened unspecified actions if their demand for the renovation of the university’s campuses cannot be met by the university’s authorities, ahead of their recent action against Ministers Samuel Tweah and Nathaniel F. McGill.
