By Joseph Edegbo;

As the nation marches toward the 2023 General Elections, the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Chief Chris Isiguzo has enjoined the media to set agenda that is more nationalistic and patriotic.

Isuguzo was a Guest on AIT Program, Kakaiki on Wednesday, where he spoke on State of Media and Press Freedom In Nigeria.

He emphasized the need for the agenda to be devoid of religious, sectional and tribal sentiments as well as central and beneficial to the entire country

The NUJ President observed that when One looks at the country’s political landscape, there must be different conversations which the media must moderate.

Chief Isuguzo warned journalists against being carried away by peculiarly benefits which, he said, wouldn’t stand the test of time.

“As we approach the 2023 elections, no matter whatever platform you operate, consider yourself as the conscience of the society. Society looks unto you for direction” he said.

The NUJ President reminded journalists that apart from information dissemination, they are also saddled with the responsibility of educating the society.

Journalists, he warned, should be wary of desperate political actors who could go extra miles to do what they want, hence the need for his colleagues not to throw caution to the wind.

Emphasizing the need for mutual engagement and understanding between the media and security agencies, Chief Isuguzor declared that without the media, there is no democracy.
Media, he argued, is the oxygen of democracy.
