Bring Perpetrators Of Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists To Justice – AMDF Tasks African Nations

By Joseph Edegbo :
As the world marks 2021 International Day to end Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has urged relevant authorities in Africa to ensure perpetrators of such crimes are brought to justice.
In a statement to mark the Day, the Executive Director of AMDF, Mr. Iliya Kure notes with concern, increasing cases of journalists being killed, attacked and kidnapped around the continent in the cause of their statutory duties.
“African Leaders should understand that the media is instrumental to projecting the voice of the voiceless, unraveling socio economic issues, as well as proffering solutions to challenges and problems faced by many.
“The media have also played great roles in scrutinizing governments, exposing corruption and holding leaders accountable, thereby contributing to the greater transparency and public sector stability.
“While the media achievements are worth celebrating, press freedom in Africa continues to deteriorate, a situation, AMDF views as a serious threat.
“Ironically too, most of the press unfriendly countries, have forgotten that the press have over the years made invaluable contributions to the continent’s democratic journey.
“As a media development organisation that provides professional support to media, journalists and upholds press freedom in Africa, we frown at any act that can jeopardize freedom of the press in Africa.
“International Day to end Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists is celebrated annually on 2nd November”, the statement concludes.
