Former Nigerian Military Leader, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has distanced himself from news linking him with a purported arrested helicopter supplying food to bandits in Niger State, north central Nigeria.
A statement by his spokesman, Yakubu Suleiman, urged Nigerians to “ignore such treacherous acts and to be careful with the kind of information they dish out and share on Social Media.
A section of Nigerian media had linked the former leader to an arrested helicopter involved in supplying food and weapons to bandits in his home state.
But in response, the former leader described the act as a “heinous crime that is unbecoming of any patriotic citizen.”
According to the statement, the former leader said “he would have ignored such spurious news, but has to [respond to] set the record straight.
“This kind of fake news has the potential of aggravating the already tense security situation in the country and should not be condoned.”
The statement lamented on how “individuals can be so callous to peddle such news and smear the image and character of people.”
He urged “Nigerians to continue to work and pray for enduring peace in Nigeria.”
