On Wednesday, Tangale women in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State embarked on a peaceful protest to press home their demand, that Governor Inuwa Yahaya approves and announce the newly elected paramount ruler of Tangale people, the ‘Mai Tangle’.
They alleged that the delay in making announcement and the Governor’s body language was tilting towards a particular candidate who contested, but did not win the majority votes cast by kingmakers.
Immediate past ruler, the 15th Mai Tangle, HRH Abdu Buba Maisheru (II) died on the 11th of January 2021, which paved way for the selection of the 16th Mai Tangle.
Tangale Kingmakers made up of nine people, went through the process of selecting new Mai on 15th February. The results showed that Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba secured 5 votes, Mr. Danladi Maiyamba secured 2 votes, while Mr. Ahmed Magaji 2 votes.
The Kingmakers handed over the result to the governor through his deputy, but there was silence from the governor, which led to the protest.
On Friday, the protest took another dimension when hoodlums came in, leading to destruction of properties.
