Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has condemned the arrest and detention of Cameroonian journalist, Kingsley Njoka Fomunyuy, asking the authorities to drop all allegations and grant an unconditional release to the already abused journalist.
A statement by AMDF Executive Director, Iliya Kure said, Mr. Njoka was arrested mid- May, at his residence in Duola, on the grounds of sponsoring anglophone separatists, but his lawyers and family only got access to him last week.
AMDF said the development is coming a week after the announcement of the death of Samuel Wazizi, a Cameroonian journalist who died in custody from injuries sustained while in detention by the Cameroonian government.
“He is accused of sponsoring anglophone separatists, for now, he is still being held at the country’s State Security Head office in the country’s capital, Yaoundé. This is a typical situation here in Cameroon where journalists critical of the government are arrested and detained. His lawyers say his health condition does not look good,” Eyong Blaise, a Cameroonina Journalist told AMDF.
Corroborating the story to AMDF, another Cameroonian journalist and press freedom advocate, Mbom Sixtus, said the government of Cameroon is trying to consolidate its lie now by preventing the truth from being told, and further stated that Njoka is in prison in Yaoundé.
According to AMDF, Njoka has not been officially charged to court, however, journalists in Cameroon have been advocating for his release.
