Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has inaugurated a 38-member Fund Raising Committee to garner resources to assist those affected by Coronavirus in terms of feeding and provision of other essentials.
This is just as the Governor requests the people of the State to fast and pray on Monday for divine intervention.
Acknowledging how people would suffer, he said “It is indicative that so many people get what they feed themselves on daily basis, as they go out, they get what to eat for that day. Government finds it extremely necessary to help people in that direction. At least to cushion the effect of the situation at hand.”
Adding that, as government is taking all the necessary measures there are people that are most vulnerable, who needs all the necessary support, “…that is why we are doing our best to avoid what could be seen and termed as Stomach Virus instead. Hence the need for this quick intervention.”
“That is why we chose people who are honest, genuine and people with dexterity in resource management. People who can take all the pains to locate those needy ones in our nooks and crannies.
This committee will find out donations from organisations on corporate social responsibility basis, from individuals, in order to galvanize the strength and see how to take care of those people who need such support,” he discloses.
He explained further that “We need to run away from what I can describe as Stomach Virus. It is therefore for this reason that we are making all these moves now. We also need all the support from our people.”
He further revealed that, as the state government is turning the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium into Isolation Centre, for the time being, “The richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has promised to provide the state with 600 bedded facilities as his contribution in this proactive measure against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic,” governor said.
Ganduje invited all retired health workers in the state, to kindly come and register with the state Ministry of Health on voluntary basis as part of the preparations for this pandemic.
“I am also calling on people to Fast tomorrow Monday 30th March, which is equivalent to 5th Sha’aban, 1441 AH, to pray for Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness against the deadly pandemic.
As we are all praying against this for the state, the country and the entire humanity, in our Mosques in 5 daily prayers and in our Friday Mosques, it is very important to always pray for Allah’s protection,” he said.
The Committee’s Terms of Reference include to identify organisations and individuals that can give assistance for the gigantic work, to identify the needy people who would be given the assistance to ameliorate their sufferings, to work out modalities of distribution to the public, among others.
Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, Vice Chancellor, of Bayero University, Kano, is the Chairman of the Committee, while Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata is the Co-Chair of the Committee. Other members of the Committee include, Senator Barau I. Jibril, representing Kano North, Hon Alasan Ado Doguwa, Leader, House of Representatives and Aliko Dangote, represented by Salisu Sambajo.
Others are Abdussamad Isyaka Rabi’u, Chairman BUA Group of Companies, represented by Alhaji Karami Isyaka Rabi’u, Abdullahi Abbas, APC Kano Chairman, Nasiru Aliko Koki, Commissioners Murtala Sule Garo of Local Governments, Muhammad Garba of Information, Zahara’u Umar Muhammad of Women Affairs and Muhammad Tahar Adam of Religious Affairs.
So also Prof. Abdu Salihi, Chairman Kano Integrity Forum, Sheikh Abdullahi Saleh Pakistan, Sheikh Usman Yusuf Makwarari, State Chairman of Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kano Branch, Eze Ndigbo, Oba of Yoruba in Kano, representative of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), among others.
The Committee was given One Week to submit report. After the inauguration the Chairman of the Committee Prof. Bello made an acceptance remarks, assuring that they would do a diligent and patriotic work for the successful accomplishment of their assignment.
He commended the governor for finding them worthy of being members of this all-important committee, adding that, “We all appreciate government’s concern for the plight of the people, caused by this pandemic. It is important for people to also know that, this Committee needs both financial and non-financial assistance from corporate bodies and individuals.”
Prof Bello called on people to come forward and assist tremendously, while urging them to also consider those who need assistance more than others when the time for distribution of assistance comes, “…we should be our brothers keepers with this intervention or not. This is very important,” he urged.
Governor Ganduje, later announced the first donation of N28.5 Million from United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the assistance of Fumigation facilities rendered by Lee Group of Companies. Adding that all such assistance that were rendered to the state before the inauguration of the Committee would be handed over to the Committee.
