March 8th, a day set aside to celebrate women all over the world as the International Women’s Day may have come and gone, but the relevance of it cannot be overlooked.
Accordingly, the Founder and Executive Director of Bridge that Gap Initiative Kaduna, North West Nigeria, Gloria Kasang Bulus has joined the world not only to recognise the achievements and relevance of women but to identify with millions of oppressed women who go unheard.
A press statement signed by Bulus noted that the day is a very special and important day in history to recognise the achievements and relevance of women globally. As a day set aside by the United Nations in honour of women for their remarkable contribution to the society, it also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable societies.
Bulus noted that the 2019, IWD theme, “Balance for better” calls for better opportunities for women and leaves everyone with the task of ensuring a balance in addressing the issues concerning gender and create opportunities for women to be fully part of nation building and to reach their full potentials.
She therefore, called for “better and more opportunities for women in governance, quality and affordable health care, environmental protection, and education”. She also enjoined “political office holders, government, religious and traditional leaders and other stake holders to give women more opportunity to contribute meaningfully to socio-economic development and to enable them leave their footprints in history of any nation’s achievements”.
“We salute all women because we strongly believe and recognise their role in the society. We celebrate the voices of many women that go unheard and who continue to be dominated from securing their rights and realising their full potential. We remember women today as heroes who stand strong despite the impact of environmental crises due to their traditional roles at home. We honour the power and struggles of women who have broken all barriers and reached the pinnacle of success in every sphere of life”, she said.
