Nigeria Elections: Peace Commission Cautions Against Hate Speeches

Date:

The Kaduna State Peace Commission, Northwest Nigeria has cautioned political parties, politicians, candidates and other Nigerians against hate speeches.

A statement signed by the Executive Vice Chairperson of the Commission, Priscilla Ankut noted with grave concern, reports of hate speeches in the form of statements by politicians and candidates with potentials of being interpreted as calls for violent actions.

While acknowledging that some violent incidences associated with political campaigns have been reported, including reports of the death of two persons at a campaign rally within Kaduna Metropolis, the Commission said ” The Commission has also received reports of vandalization of public campaign billboards and posters.”

According to the statement, these unfortunate developments can undermine the peace currently enjoyed in the state.

“In view of these developments, the Kaduna State Peace Commission is constrained to: urge all political parties, politicians, candidates, followers and citizens alike, to refrain from all statements and actions that can cause tension; urge the security agencies to beef-up surveillance at all campaign rallies, as well as monitor all hot-spots across the state, in order to avoid a breakdown of law and order, Urge citizens to eschew violence and reject all calls and/or incitements to commit violence.

“The Kaduna State Peace Commission assures the people of the State that it will continue to work with all stakeholders in the State and beyond to ensure peaceful elections in the State.

We appeal to all political parties, candidates, traditional leaders, religious leaders, civil society organizations and the media to continue to promote and mobilize the electorate towards peaceful elections.” the statement added.
