Nigeria: Gombe Launches Local Action Plan On Women On Peace And Security

An NGO, Search for Common Ground in collaboration with UN-Women has launched the Local Action Plan on promoting women’s engagement in peace and security in two local government areas of Gombe State, Nigeria’s North East Region.

The local government areas, are Kaltungo and Yamaltu/ Deba.

The State Project Coordinator of the organisation, Chorbe Joshua Gonlur who announced this in Gombe said the programme is European Union funded, working on the conducted validation on the data collected for reflection on context specific modules of the Local Government Areas, and the State.

The validation is aimed at deepening Engagement on Women on Peace, Security project before the launching in the two local government areas.

He spoke on the documents and commitments made on the implementation of the action plans by the LGA Chairmen with the assurance of supporting women’s actionable initiatives in the local government areas.

Mr. Gonlur added that Traditional councils have also reaffirmed their commitments in strengthening women in Peace and Security processes in their domains and hoped that such gesture would be extended to other local government areas in the state.

He further said that the organisation during the development of the document had engaged lead consultant, researchers and enumerators who facilitated the process of information generation and reflections, hence the need to validate the data collected by the respondents .

“The document will be used by the leaders to address issues faced with the communities and to further strengthen women in decision making processes in communities. The document is a bottom top approach which will help in facilitating issues in a non-adversarial ways and having the common ground approach in the implementation of UNSCR 1325.

He hoped that the document would further serve as a working tool for the Local Government Authority as sustainable measures to enable them own the process at the Local level.
