Don’t Disseminate Fake News, Group Cautions Journalists

A group of professional journalists under the auspices of Arewa Online Media Network, (AroMeN) has  tasked members of the profession against fake news.

The group said in Kano, Northwest Nigeria, that it is vital for journalists, particularly online media practitioners, to abide by ethics of the profession.

Meanwhile, a veteran journalist, Nasir Dambatta of Politics Today, from Kano State has been elected Chairman of the group at its meeting in Kano.

In his acceptance speech, he emphasised on the need to fight fake news, so as to save journalism profession from quacks.

He frowned at how fake news became the order of the day across the country particularly by some unprofessional online medium.

“We will uphold the ethics of our noble profession and we will be fair to all. The group will not tolerate quacks, hence membership will be based purely on professionalism,” he said

Danbatta added that the group will ensure that it wages war against fake news across the country by ensuring that only professional journalists are allowed to become members of AroMen.

He promised to carry every member along, adding that the group will constitute Board of Trustees from among online practising journalists within the 19 northern states and Abuja, irrespective of ethnic nationality.

He said the Arewa Online Media Network was established to promote professionalism in the coverage of news and events through their available online platform.

Other officials are John Femi Adi of Daily Newstimes from Kogi State as Secretary, Malam Abdurrauf Musa of Abuja Chronicle as Vice Chairman.

Assistant Secretary went to Miapsuk Madugu of (Plateau State) Times Magazine, Financial Secretary – Oyewale Oyelola (Kwara) Factual Times, Publicity Secretary – Mohammed Ibrahim of (Kaduna State) Developmental Reporters, and Auditor went to Salma Suleiman of ( Nasarawa State) Sarewa Online.
