The World Population Day 2018 has been observed with a call on Nigerians to strictly ensure that human right to child birth spacing is not violated.
With the theme, ‘Family Planning as a Human Right’, Director Primary Health Care in the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHCDA), Dr. Iliyasu Neyu, noted that the world Population Day celebration has become a very important event in the history of man to take stock out of human existence.
Dr. Neyu who was speaking at an annual media forum organized by Development Communications Network (DevComs) in collaboration with Kaduna SPHCDA to commemorate the Day in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, observed that with the threat of over population, there was need for stakeholders to make concerted efforts towards ensuring an enabling environment for man’s existence.
He explained that 30% of the world population arose from unintended pregnancy, stressing that steps must be taken to curtail the situation.
He added that it could be done through an informed society with the message of family planning without discrimination of any kind.
Access to information on family planning, according to him, should be the right of individuals, while couples should be properly counseled on the methods.
Dr. Neyu explained that for effective management of world population, there was the need for sufficient child birth spacing centres, while couples and individuals are educated with sufficient commodities to enhance that the programme was widely accepted.
Citing the Malthusian theory, the Director said over population, is detrimental if not managed well, saying, it could lead to diseases, famine, wars and other social vices against the megre resources to accommodate the population.
Earlier, Coordinator, Africa Media Development Foundation, AMDF, Syeken Dadik, who spoke on behalf of the organisers said, the day was being celebrated all over the world to raise awareness on the issue of population with a view to coming up with practical solutions that could ensure that the world is a better place to live in.
Participants included media and Civil Society Organizations.
