Nigeria: Cholera Outbreak in Gombe, Kills 3, Several others Hospitalized

Gombe State Ministry of Health, northeast of the country has confirmed 30 cases of cholera disease with three deaths recorded at the Madaki Quarters in Bolari, east of Gombe metropolis.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ishaya Kennedy who confirmed the incident to Journalists in Gombe on Sunday, said some of the cases were reported at the Madaki Primary Health Care Centre on Thursday and were transfered to the state Epidemiology Unit of the state Ministry of Health for confirmation.

The Commissioner said 30 cases were recorded within three days with three deaths, while 12 patients were still on admission at the Madaki Primary Health Care Centre

He disclosed that a Rapid Response Team had been placed on high alert, while drugs had been procured and sent to the Primary Health Care Centre while more drugs would be procured for other clinics and hospitals.

Dr. Kennedy who said public awareness campaign would be mounted on the  proper handling of foods and water to avoid contamination, visited Almajiri Tsangayya school where the outbreak was first reported and assured them of government support

“We are now going about sensitizing the Schoolers then the ward heads, opinion leaders, the gate keepers, the district heads, we are now going about mobilising people to understand that this is the period where such incident occur”.

He advised the health personnel at the facility where the victims are being admitted not to chew kolanut or chewing gum while working within the facility .

After closing from work, he added, they should remove there uniforms and suck them into the bleach and wear their personal dress to their homes to avoid spreading the virus .
