Zamfara State Governor and Chairman Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar has urged the National Assembly, to remove the nomenclature which describes state governors as “chief security officers” of their states.
Yari made the plea during a stakeholders meeting on the worsening security situation in Zamfara State, Northwest of the country held at the Government House, Gusau.
The governor said there is no need giving such titles to state governors since they have no control over the security agents in their respective states.
“No governor has the right or power to discipline, recruit or dismiss any security officer posted to his state no matter the offence or otherwise of the security agents, despite answering the title of Chief security of his state”, he said.
He said, he would soon propose to the national assembly requesting the removal of the nomenclature which describes state governors as “chief security officers” of their states.
On the recent attack, Yari confirmed that 38 persons were killed in Birnin Magaji local government area of the state.
He lamented, that the attack happened only nine days after President Muhammadu Buhari directed the development of more security personnel to the state.
“Not a single additional security man has reported to the state following the presidential order and so the bandits have continued to unleash terror on innocent citizens of the state despite spending huge resources on security in the last seven years in the state.”.
Yari directed political office holders, traditional rulers, religious and community leaders to immediately bring their people together, pray and discuss workable ways that would end the current security challenges in the state.
