The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda Chapter has given the federal government two weeks ultimatum to suspend the Rector, Engr. Ahmad Abubakar Lugga or face the union consequences.

The union gave the ultimatum on Wednesday during the union’s congress held at the institution in Kaura Namoda, zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.

Addressing a news conference, ASUP chairman, Engr. Umar Usman Maikunlele said on 14th March, the union passed a Vote of No Confidence on the entire management of the institution as a result of financial misappropriation and alleged diversion of over N3 billion which resulted in sending the affected officers on compulsory leave.

Maikunlele said despite the Governing Council’s sending the officers on compulsory leave and submitting its report to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu more than three months ago, the minister has not removed or suspend the rector from office as provided in the Public Civil Service Rules 2008 Edition Article 030406.

“The Union is giving two weeks from today 13th June, that if government fails to do needful to suspend and remove the hand of Engr. Abubakar Ahmad Lugga from finances of the Polytechnic and save the Polytechnic from the present predicament, the union will have no option than to take a new dimension until the government is ready to do the right thing”, he said.

The Union alleged that despite being on compulsory leave, the Rector continues diversion of over N49 Million from the Promotion Arrears sent by the federal government and other diversions in the TSA of the Polytechnic.

“The union also alleged that there was an exchange of hands between the Rector and some staff that matters in the federal ministry of education which could be the reason why the process is unnecessarily delayed and frustrated “, he said.

Maikunlele said the union will not relent on the struggle for justice despite all forms of the intimidation by the rector.

“This effort to buy time for Engr. Abubakar Ahmad Lugga to go for a sabbatical leave at his exit as Rector of the Polytechnic is an act of celebrating corruption”, he said.

All efforts to contact the rector was not successful as his phone was switched off.
