Nigeria – Chef Arraigned Over Alleged N100m Jewellery Theft

A Beniniose Chef, Benard Hovnkpe, who allegedly stole jewelry worth N100 million and N250,000 cash from his employer, on Monday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, South west Nigeria .

Hovnkpe, 45, is facing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Julius Babatope, told the court that the offences were committed sometime in March 2017, at No. 41A, Kaduna Road, Crystal Estate, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos.

Babatope alleged that Hovnkpe posed as a chef and stole a bag containing necklaces, ear rings, hand chains, wrist watches and eye glasses, all valued at N100 million and N250,000 cash.

The prosecutor said the items and the amount belonged to one Mr Obi Udenwa.

He said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Adegite, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until June 28 for mention. (NAN)
