The Nigerian Air Force on Friday, appealed to National Universities Commission (NUC) for approval to upgrade its Institute of Technology(AFIT), Kaduna, from Diploma-awarding to Degree-awarding institution.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, made the request when he visited Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, in Abuja.

The institution is expected to run conventional courses as well as the core mandate of NAF including Air Force Logistics, Strategy and Policy Formulation.

Abubakar stressed the need for capacity-building through education, adding that there was the need to move the institute to the next level.

”NAF’s priority is to build capacity and to give education a priority,” he said, adding that the Force had interacted closely with many universities, especially in the area of Research and Development.

He also said that NAF had signed 15 Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with some tertiary institutions in the country, and assured NUC that the institute had all requirements for upgrading to degree awarding institution.

The air chief congratulated NUC for the good work it was doing in Nigeria’s universities, saying “the NAF is a beneficiary of what you are doing”.

Responding, NUC’s Rasheed commended the air chief for his vision of developing human capacity, saying that having more universities was a good development for the country.

He said that as a commission, it was disposed to the necessity of more universities in Nigeria.

Rasheed said that 42 universities were owned by the Federal Government, while 75 were private.

He said that the commission was happy with the request by NAF to upgrade the institution to a degree-awarding institution, and assured that NUC would work closely with the Force.

“I want to assure you that on the side of NUC, you won’t find us wanting; our people will be willing to assist you. We assure you of our support and commitment,” he said
