Federal and state governments have been urged to take drastic measures in curtailing the menace of drug abuse which is on the increase especially in northern Nigeria
A lecturer with the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Federal University Kashere, Gombe, Dr. Anas Ibrahim Kubalu made the call at the annual Ramadan Lecture organized by the Gombe State branch of the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria IMAN with a theme: Drugs Abuse and its Menace to the Society at Gombe state University, northeast of the country on Sunday.
Dr. Kubalu said the Socio-Economic implication of drugs abuse courses coax among family resulting in divorce, violence, losing unity among family, as well as armed robbery and theft.
The University Don also spoke of the Economic implications such as loss of potential manpower, lack of productivity among the youth which can make the GDP to drop.
Also speaking Dr. Umar Shuaibu of the Psychiatric Department Gombe State Specialist Hospital said involving Community, Religious leaders and parents towards moral upbringing will assist in reducing the abuse of psycho active substance in the society.
The guest speaker, a reknown Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Sani Umar Rijiyar Lemo said inculcating good moral upbringing among the society was the only solution to drugs abuse.
The Chairman Gombe State branch of the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria, Malam Danladi Adamu said the choice of this year’s theme” Drugs abuse and its menace to the society ” was based on the report of the increasing prevalence of abuse of drugs amongst Nigerians which cuts across all sexes, groups and ages.
Malam Danladi said drugs abuse was a societal menace which needs a collective effort in curtailing the menace.
