A university lecturer, Dr Olumuyiwa Asaolu, has called for development of artificial intelligence to tackle traffic challenges particularly in Lagos State.

Asaolu, the Head of Department, System Engineering, University of Lagos, made the call on Thursday in a lecture he delivered in Lagos on “Harnessing the Potential in Computer Village and Nigeria through Artificial Intelligence”.

The lecture was to sensitise members of the Computer and Applied Phone Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), Ikeja, on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The don said that Nigeria should develop local technologies and not rely on imported ones.

“There is the need to localise our things to fit our environment; Computer Village can play a very huge role.

“CAPDAN members should identify needs and relate them to the government. Government can come up with traffic intelligence to address traffic challenges,’’ he said.

Mr Ayodele Adewale, a former Chairman of Amuwo Odofin LGA in Lagos State, said that AI was a platform that could get people and their governments working.

Adewale spoke on “Artificial Intelligence and Governance”.

“Computer Village should do more discoveries; once you have an idea that can solve a problem, government will come looking for you.

“Lagos State is a good ground to do these things. The intelligence is here, the problem is here and the solution is here,” he said.

The President of CAPDAN, Mr Adeniyi Ojikutu, said that AI should be designed to suit, understand and address immediate needs of individuals and nations.

Ojikutu said that artificial intelligence would assist in national security and economic development.

“It will assist in achieving our goals in the industry; this is what we mean by localising content to help in problem-solving.

“These are the things that will determine the future,” he said.

The president said that CAPDAN would focus on discovering what the future would require.

“We bring people together to help on business development and technology development; it is not all about trading but business development.

“There is the need to capture many new things at regular intervals to stay abreast of innovations.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that AI is demonstrated by machines, in contrast to natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. AI is also known as machine intelligence.

The machines have the potential of studying feeling and understanding the way human beings feel in terms of reaction, behaviour and inter-relationship with their environments.
